Hello

What are you guys using to get at the dizzy bolt. My bent wrench just isn't doing it. It gets hot in there.

What is the special tool to buy for no headacke timing ?

you can pick up a wrench at most parts stores that is basically 2 L shaped sides that snap together.

There should be plenty of room on a small block chevy to just, put a wrench on it.

Doesn't work for me very well.

I use a 9/16 swivel socket and a long extension. It works OK -- it's a tight angle on the swivel socket, but it gets the job done.

I was just at sears yesterday, and they had actual distributor wrenches in 3 different sizes, and I'M SURE -- they would work perfect. I think they were 7 or 8 bucks.

High end tool companies ie Snap-on should be able to supply one. That's where I got mine 30 years ago.

That's what I use, but it is close quarters on a K20...

There's usually enough room but it seems like everytime I want to loosen or tighten it the motor is hot. That's why I went ahead and sprang for the dist. wrench..... Glad I did.

I've Got About 1/2 Dozen Different Shaped 9/16" Snap-on Dist. Wrenches That I Bought At Pawn Shops For $12 To $15 Each. Man There Is Nothing You Can't Do If You Have The Right Tools.

If you own a 67-72 I believe there are three tools you MUST have. You can get by without any of them however the time saved by owning them is huge.

1. The wrench everybody is talking about in this thread. Mine still has the price tag on it from the used tool store. $15. It is a snap-on.

2. Is a wrench made by kd tools. I'm sure others make them. It has a 3/8ths on one side and a 5/16ths on the other. When you bleed brakes other tools work, however this one works the best.

3. I owned my Chevelle for 10 or so years before I bought this gem. I used little screwdrivers, fuse pullers, and other similar tools to get the horse shoe clip off the door handle or window crank. The clip always goes flying. You are always complaining. Then I bought this tool. Slip the tool behind the crank or handle, the clip slides off and doesn't go flying.

That whole box of tools set me back less than $30. You can't calculate how much time each one saves EVERY time you use it. What is your time worth?

Yeah on a small block I have always used a regular 'ol 9/16" wrench, but for the last 10 years or so I have been using a header bolt, so then I use a 3/8" wrench.

I'm usualy sitting on my radiator when I work on the motor. (Yes, it's relevant! lol)

I don't have any difficulty using a standard box wrench, but that is likely due to the angle I am comming at it from.

Hands down the best wrench is the flexhead gearwrench ratchet wrench. It's like it was made for the dizzy holddown bolt.

That's what I use and it works great. I bought a special wrench from Autozone, but it's kinda funky to use. My flexhead works best.

I am the oddball I guess. One of only three professional tools I have. I have a snap-on a 9/16 and 1/2 distributor wrenchesas well as a pivot pin puller. I love the distributor wrenches. Of course I use them for more than on distributors. I used some a few years ago when I was working on my 82 C10 and they were great, that I had to get me some. Much smaller head and good reach to fit in tight or confined areas around bolt head. I haven't been rich enough to buy any other snap-on tools.

Mine is a bit tight, but my V8 sits in the 6-banger slot.

you can get one at napa autos, the are basicaly a piece of 3/8" solid rod with a 9/16" box end with 2 90* bends and it works pretty damn well for $8.

Maybe I have a strange bolt, but I CANNOT do it with a standard wrench, I can get it so far, then the bolt is simply in the wrong position to get another grab on the head of the bolt to tighten it any more.

I use a short (5" or so) offset 1/2"x9/16" 12-point box-end. One tooth at a time, sometimes.
