Should have known better....

Frustration rant.............
Well the 82 had a wristpin on #1 go bad about a month ago. Thought I did good replacing the rod/piston etc. Hey it was a fairly new Autozone redone long block. Well looks like I'll be yanking an engine again soon. Near as we can figure sounds like I lost a skirt on #1 or #2. Means something in that piece of crap long block is out of kilter. I guess i should have redone the whole thing then, but I was hoping the rest of the engine had been done right. RIGHT!!!!! Time to go shopping for a 250 short block that's done right this time. If it wasn't such a pain, finding all the accessories, I would givre serious thought to a V8. Hopefully it'll stay together long enough to find what I need reasonablly.

Thanks for the rant time.

on my 454 block, it sounded like the skirt broke off a piston, turned out to be a spun rod bearing.

NEVER NEVER NEVER buy Autozone parts if they have moving parts on them, only plugs and oil and such, anyways, keep your eyes open in the local paper you might find a longblock V8 for cheap. I bought one about 10 years ago, complete never fired for $300. The only bad thing, was I was in collage at the time and found a few things wrong with the motor, could have been fixed for cheap, but didn't have the time, so I had to take it back. Good luck.

Go for the V8,man.What accessories/brackets do you need?I don't know about your area, but here in the midwest,I can turn up a complete 350 and all the brackets cheaper that a straight 6 short block would be

76HighSierra said it all. Don't really want to stick something in there that has too much guts. She has too much of her father in her to keep her foot out of it, besides if she wants that she'll need to get more work and pay for it.

I'm leary about the V8 swap becasue of all the stuff I don't have to do the swap. AC/alter/pwr steer bracksets, throttle, mounts, drive shaft changes (I assume). That option is still open. Might be able to find a trashed out truck with a 305/350 with all the junk I need.

1FastC10....I turned those duties over to the 16yr old. I haven't drivien the thing in months.

no changes necessary to trans or driveshaft.Availability may differ where your at,but around here all the brackets are a dime a dozen.

Does the V8 sit in the same position as the 6 for these year trucks? I know on my 70, the V8 sits forward more than the 250 6. It pulls eveything forward to where you would need a different drive shaft.

If the 81+ are like the 73-80...the motor mounts are the same, all you would need to do is move the mount(s) on the stand from the "6" position to the "8" position...there are two sets of holes allowing you to do this. I am pretty sure the tranny stays where it is at regardless of the engine in the truck since the reposition on the mounts on the stands is vertical (up and down), not horizontal (forward and back).

the tranny does not move when changing from a i-6 to a v-8.

Don't ya just love seein' the V8 in the I6 position on those old trucks? It's usually accompanied by a stack of fan spacers to get the fan close enough to the radiator to actually cool it.Makes me giggle every time I see it!

I would use electric fans in that case, thats what I use on my truck because I had NO fan shroud and didn't feel like finding a good one.
