350 To A 292

So the '72 K20 I just bought has a 350 Chevy and a 4 speed in it. I would like to swap it out to a 292 so I could experiment with a turbo. What do I need to put a 292 in? On the 292 that I have, the little metal brackets that bolt on the motor look like they mate up to a sbc/bbc motor mount. Are the 350 towers the same? Can they easily be modified to work?

Are all 4X4 shrouds the same regardless what motor? Are the starters the same? The bellhousing pattern is the same, correct?

Also, how hard is it to find power steering brackets?

Re: 350 To A 292

Im no expert but I do know the 292 mounts are offset and I read on this site the other day that a k series 4x4 had a diffrent cross member for a 292. Im sure some real experts will chime in and elaberate further.

I'm going to watch this thread. I want to replace the 350 in my truck with a 292 as well.

Re: 350 To A 292

The passenger side mount is moved forward a few inches on the 292. The drivers side mount is in the same spot.

In my '63 nova, I went from a 194/230/250 to the 292. The mounts on the 194/230/250 engines are in the same spot as a 350. To mount the 292, I made a n adapter plate. It's not as pretty as this one, but it works the same way:
.
The only thing about using this setup is that it requires the use of an electric fuel pump. If you decide to go this route, I'd probably buy the plate above instead of making one. If you do this here's the link to purchase: http://12bolt.com/250292_products/in...ne_accessories

Before purchasing, send them an email to see if they can answer some of your questions. The owner has a turbocharged 292 in an el camino. Let them know that 63ChevyII from inliners sent you.

Here are some pics of the 292 in my setup:

Re: 350 To A 292

As said above, the mounts are different than all other motors, I belive all the brackets are specific to 292's. I was going to add power steering to a customers 64 with a292 but was like looking for hens teeth trying to find P/S brackets. I believe that in the later model medium duties you will find the 292's but a lot of them will be integral intake motors and all brackets are different from the earlier design. and if you are going to want a/c you will have to either make you own or settle for aftermarket brackets the factory brackets are even worse for availability than p/s brackets from what I have found. Anything I am wrong on, I sure a 292 guru can correct.

Re: 350 To A 292

So do I just need a tower or a whole cross member?

There is a thread about the mounts on page 2 of this forum.

Re: 350 To A 292

If I could find a tower I could make it work with a little torching and welding.
