1967 power steering gear box

I am having a HARD time finding a 67 power steering gear box, mine is leaking like crazy. Everybody I call says, "We have a 66 and a 68 but no 67". Any ideas? There is a place that offered to rebuild it for around $260, but was hoping to find one already rebuilt for less than that.

Re: 1967 power steering gear box

1967 (or earlier) never came with an integral power steering gear. They had ram assisted power steering, completely different animal. Just buy a power steering gear box from '68 or newer, even 73+ trucks up to 1980 ? (Sometime around there they switched to metric O ring fittings).

Re: 1967 power steering gear box

68 or earlier used ram assist power steering. The 67 chassis is not dimpled for the integral gear that the 69 up used. WES

Just cut a t in the frame and hammer it in. Test fit the PS box. Weld up the t.
Takes less than an hour. Done use any 68 and up PS Box

Might want to post pics of the current setup so the wizards can see what you have.
You may have a conversion that you can get a rebuilt box for easily, or er, not.

What year truck?
If 67 see frame mod above first
If 68-72, acquire a Power steering box
New rag joint
Power steering brackets (2 parts)
Power steering pump and pulley
Crank shaft pulley if yours is not equipped
Hoses: 1 pressure, 1 return
Be aware that you get a matched set of pump / gear / hoses
there are flare style connections and there are o-ring style connections
All work the same but you can't mix them up without having adapters $
Do some searches on the site, someone will have a kit for sale somewhere.

Yea, we might have jumped the gun, without knowing the whole story.

Get a box for a '78 C10. Correct fittings and only 3 1/2 turns lock to lock :-)

Will the 67/68 pitman arm work with this 78 box?

How does this ratio feel? Why is it better?

I like it. My 2002 Tahoe is the same ratio so I'm used to it. The earlier ones I believe are 4 1/2 turns.

I've been told the box is different on 4x4s but I haven't compared them.

I always thought all 67 frames were flat in the steering box area.
Are you sure your frame is a 67? If so do you know the build month/year of your truck?

Yes. I tried putting a P/S Gear box on my '67 K/10 Suburban. Had big time problems with the power gear box ripping itself loose, throwing nuts, breaking 1/2'' bolts, leaking and sliding up and down the springs. Steering geometry was bad.
I finally spread some JB Weld on the crack on my manual steering sector and went back to the old Armstrong system. Still steered funky, since I had cut up the original drag link.
The K trucks had a steering sector that moves front to back, the 2wd trucks went left/right.
Big time problems. Look for ram assist power steering on corvette forums. That's compatible but way expensive.
Or do curls and build up your forearms.

Wow. I just answered a ''ghost post''. Never met Fitz either, although he was in Tucson when he was active on this board.

Re: 1967 power steering gear box

I saw this at Rock Auto, under steering gear for a 1968 1/2 ton Chevy truck. When you click the link, it says they are rebuilt in the USA. I don't have any experience with them, but the price does not look bad.

LARES Part # 1075 Remanufactured; Power Gear
w/ 3 - 3-1/4 turns

box and core costs $136.79
$86.79 $50.00 $136.79

Frames are different but not in that area. You can shim a 4x4s gear out to bolt on because the pitman arm swings forward and back. On a 2WD the pitman arm swings right to left so centering of the steering gear becomes a problem.

Careful what you buy, you get what you pay for. Rebuilt and remanufactured steering gears are worlds apart.

No, they are not. My 67 frame is dimpled for the steering box as can be clearly seen in the photo's below. Before you say the frame can't be a 67 with a dimple, the partial vin stamped on the upper side of the frame rail on the drivers side, just behind the steering gear matches the full VIN on the B pillar which decodes as a 1967 C10 six cylinder 1/2 ton built in the Atlanta assembly plant. My truck was #1294 of the first production run which means it was likely shipped in October or November of 1967.
