As some of you know, I bought a 1974 GMC a couple weeks ago. We're still in the honeymoon phase, but I am a little frustrated filling the truck up. It takes at least 15 minutes to fill and must be done very slowly or it spills gas all over the side of the truck and onto the ground. What do the rest of you do to keep this from happening?

I had the same issue....I fiddled around with how far I let the pump nozzle stick in the fill tube...just a little out from stuck all the way in worked for me. Good luck

My theory - old style gas pump nozzles were long, smooth, and gently curved.
New style nozzles are relatively short, fat, have a wire around them, and sharply curved. Result: the gas nozzles no longer match the old vehicle gently curved fuel inlet neck and hose. So, the gas shoots against the back of the inlet and feeds back into the nozzle causing it to shut off prematurely. Solutions: turn the nozzle upside down or sideways - this risks getting the nozzle stuck in the filler neck because of the goofy wire around the nozzle - or leave the nozzle slightly out of the filler neck.
It would be a good idea to get on the ground and stick your head under the truck to see if you have any problems with your fuel inlet, like a pinched overflow hose on the filler neck.

To make it worse, California has that vapor recovery nonsense on the nozzle. It must be touching the truck for the pump to operate. GRRR!!!

washington has the same pumps as you, turning sidways works for me and i use a little pipe to space out the nozzle on those really fast flowing pumps

Turning the nozzle upside down works better than waiting. I had the same problem until I changed to a modern bedside.

You definitely don't have an issue. The only real issue is the new pumps aren't designed for old trucks. I suggest turning the pump upside-down also, it works for me.

I've usually had good luck with all of the above tips, also check the vent tube isn't clogged.
(the one running parallel to the fill pipe.)

Does it happen at all gas stations, or just one? I use to drive a Ford CC, one station I couldn't fill it, other stations it was fine.

I'd say Tucson is experiencing some of that cold, wet climate even as I type. Sure would love to be in Canada during the fishing season though eh?

Its the stupid pumps. Both of the squares i own, and the IH travelall they all have this same issue. Only one not bothered by it is the 59.

my crew cab with dual tanks is the same way, the best way i have found is to put the nozzle in just barely enough to stay in it. if i put it in any farther, it runs out as well. putting it in upside down works on the drivers side, but not the passenger for some reason.

I need to take a trip to GWN to warm up - it is exactly 32 degrees here right now. Hope the pipes don't freeze again - it is all due to global warming and hydrocarbon emissions from all the old squares in this town.

on my 78, at MOST gas stations, I just stick it in as far as it will go and have no problems. the ones I do have trouble with, I stick it in as far as it will go and then end up with it pulled back out roughly 1".

no problem with mine unless i try to bottom it out.. and we had to have the air on for the last two weeks during the day.. if that is global warming, i'll vote for it..
