64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Hi guys, Ive driven chev trucks all my life and always wanted one that would settle to the ground when I came to a stop. Air bags seemed like the right choice,
Ive had this truck for about 10 years and got tired of watching it rust into the ground about 2 months back, Ive been working on it ever since, and found this forum to be priceless for inspiration and info, Thanks to everyone who has posted a build thread on here, I start this one now in hopes it may help someone in the future in some way. Heres a pic of the truck right after I stripped the bed and painted the rims red, It all started out the fawn brown and rust, I know you fellows down south love the patina, but up here in WA state we call it rust. Motor was rebuilt a few years ago and never finished till recently, 1967 292 inline, Lug Ported goodwrench head w 305 valves, stainless steel pushrods, propane pistons, HEI ignition, 6 lbs shaved off the flywheel, Langdon Headers, Offenhauser dual carb intake, Webber 2 barrel carbs, and Dual 2.25 custom exhaust with short glass packs. it sounds like a Bi Plane. More pics soon Andy Last edited by 64chevtruck; 03-10-2014 at 04:48 PM. |

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
The exhaust drops down from the headers and goes outside the frame rail right behind the front cross memeber. Then it goes under the driver seat to just behind the cab,
One crosses over the top of the frame rails there to reach the passenger side, More on the exhaust after I finish the step notch in back, |

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Heres the beginning of the step notch I wont post a bunch of pics of it because there are many here to look at already.
You can see where I had the bags mounted first.... as usual I have to learn the hard way, so since them ive moved them about halfway up the drag links for better range of motion. Ive learned to do more research here before I mount stuff up. Thanks for all the good threads guys. More soon |

Nice Carb setup! You'll have to post a video of the dual exhaust when you get a chance.

That's a cool truck! Nice inline! You have a V8 threat in there!

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Thanks Bret, Did you mean post a vid with audio so you can hear it>? I think I can do that, I love the way it sounds.
TJ thank you. Its snappy but I dont think its a real V8 threat, Maybe if the V8 had a plug wire off or 2 Someday when I get the supercharger on it she may be an 8 killer. If not Ill just put in my 71 Cad 500 V8 I been saving, shes bone stock but got about 500 lbs of torque still. PS anyone know how to edit a post? The edit icon seems to be gone, In my first post I said the head was Lugged, but I meant Lump Ported. Id also like to add more info as my foggy mind clears out. Thanks Andy |

Hi and thank you, I suspect the build wont be near as thorough as alot of them around here, but we will see how it goes.
Happy Halloween Andy

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Sad part is,,,,,,,I forgot to check the bag size and pocket size,,,, Turns out I made the pockets too small, instead of changing all of it Ill just move the inside wall back to get more room, Turns out the bag needed to go back anyway to help with its alignment,
Last pic shows the remodeled arm with 3/4 more hard earned clearance I desperately needed, took all day to fix that. Moral...dont forget to double check stuff friends. I figured Id post pics of my mistake so people in the future could learn from it. Now for some assembly

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Im hoping this will get the front down as low as the back, If not Ive read about pancaking the crossmember or Zing the frame in front. The frame looks like the easier route to me, what do you guys think"?
thanks in advance

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Hi and thanks for the input guys, I think I will do the pancake, I have the front end apart now and it seems like a good time to do it. From what ive read 1.5 to 2 inches is what I should section out of the CM yes>?
I wish I knew if I needed to do the CM for sure or not, but my guess is that I will have to do it to be happy with the stance. Hi JDoisher, I have your build thread saved along with Coulters and Jmorales as some of my faves. You all are where I got the ideas of cupping the LCAs and other stuff. Thank you for posting your build threads, Any suggestions on other good build threads I can read?, threads that inspired you? Have a good week Andy

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Hi guys, I havent got around to doing my crossmember yet, Im still having clearance issues with the cups I put in my LCAs , they still rub, I think Ill just buy some tube LCAs with bag mounts and get a PB Dropmember later on,
Meanwhile I been working on my bed,,, I picked up some fence boards, flat black, and thompsons water seal for about 75 dollars, The fence boards come exactly 6 foot so I didnt even have to cut most of them,,,, I had some spare 16g steel so I beat most of the dents out of the wheel wells and extended them over to the sides of the bed, I mounted them closer together than normal so I can put some large treads in there if I get the right rims, I had some spare diamond plate so I put it down in to step on or put stuff on.

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
few more, The bed is trimmed out here and almost finished, I need too mount some hinges on the front of the step so it can be lifted. I put a fitting on the back side of the step so I can hook external air sources to my system, to save wear on my teeny tiny compressor,
Flat black is my friend,

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
I have a question for you guys with air bags, If my bags are all the way pumped up my truck sits level, If I run them at lower pressures it makes my truck sit crooked because my weight is off to one side. The air between the right and left bags is able to be pushed back and forth,
I got some check valves and tried putting them inline between the left and right bags but cant get it to work right, truck wont air down with them installed there,,,,

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Each corner (bag) is run separately to each paddle switch or electric valve. It inflates and exhausts on its own. 4 bags, 4 lines. That way you don't get cross contamination, especially if you go drive it and in the first corner it will feel like its rolling over!

Re: 64 Chev C10 Slam (Noob Style)
Ok thank you I will go buy 2 more paddle switches, I have only 2 now and both fronts are on one and both backs on the other, '
Another question if you have time, How do you guys know if your truck is level or not if each bag is separate><>? Mount up a bubble level like in a motorhome>?
