Exhaust sound of a mustang GT Cobra

I probably should have crawled under a mustang to begin with but has anyone come up with an exhaust setup for their smallblock truck to duplicate the GT sound? I have Flow master 50's just before the axle fed by headers and 2.5" pipes. And 2.5" tailpipes shooting straight out the back and this setup does not produce the same idle nor acceleration sound.

I am not a Ford guy but the Cobra GT's stock sounds better than my 2005 C6.

Anyone know how to get the GT sound? Pipe size, crossover, mufflers, where to place them, etc?

Most of that sound is the engine itself, you can always tell what it is by the sound.

Some engines are just unique the way they sound. You can replicate the exhaust but still not get the sound IMHO.

Re: Exhaust sound of a mustang GT Cobra

Most of the engine sound comes from the air flow into and out of the head (most of the sound made by combustion). Changing the intake manifold or adding headers will change the air flow and change the sound. The head combustion design and valve placement and size will also change it.

Re: Exhaust sound of a mustang GT Cobra

working at muffler shop for 25 years, I hear that question alot. Hey can you make my mid 90's chevy truck sound like a mustang. I even had a guy bring in two mustang mufflers to put on his old chevy car. My only response is you better buy a mustang. I did build a system for a 58 chevy truck that the guy instlled a complete mustang dtiveline in. I even installed all four factory comverters in the system. sounded awesome

That Cobra has a dual overhead cam motor, hard to duplicate that. However you can put in an X-pipe and a set of Dynomax mufflers, and that will get you alot closer.

Same reason why Ferraris sound like ferraris. It's just the combo of really small, high horse motor and short system.

Re: Exhaust sound of a mustang GT Cobra

Well, probably unlikely I will buy a mustang and what model of Dynamax or is there only one?

Also the sound of a big block is nice but would require more than an engine change since I run a 4wd with a 350 turbo with an np208.

On the Roush engine, Jack Roush is from Manchester, Ohio, about 30 miles from me on the Ohio River and has a mustang show each year in this gutted town of maybe 1000. He will autograph about any mustang when he makes his yearly appearance there.

Thanks for your responses.

Well, actually a big reason Ferraris sound like Ferraris is that Ferraris are typically either V12s or flat crank V8s in either case the left bank and right bank fire at even intervals. Cross crank American V8s don't fire L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R they fire L-R-R-L-R-L-L-R. This is the reasoning behind the GT40s "bundle of snakes". Ferrari also spends more time tuning exhaust than just about anyone, taking great care to emphasize 3rd and 6th order harmonics to create the perfect "musical" tone, what this actually means is...um, actually I have no idea, some Italian Voodoo nonsense.

You can get some elements of this sound by balancing the duals with crossover pipes, run a big ass single instead of duals, or using 180 degree headers to even out the exhaust pulses. But in the end you won't duplicate the sound of more valve area and lower lift of 4 valves with higher lift, less valve area with more overlap and float that a push rod engine produces. I've heard Vettes with 180 degree headers that come close, flat crank small blocks that get close, and an 8 into 1 header on a smallblock in a sandrail that just sounds alien, but 32 valves, DOHCs and flat cranks introduce distinct elements into the exhaust note.

Actually the reason Ferrari's sound the way they do is because they have a flat plane crank, where as most other "normal" cars have cross plane cranks...

Here's a good explanation of this

That's a cool link. And yeah, a very unique sound. Guy down the road from me has a Lambo I hear from time to time when I am home... savor that like a fine wine

Re: Exhaust sound of a mustang GT Cobra

I should have the crossover completed in a day or two and hope for some preferable sound difference. I located it at the rear of the transfer case 18" before the mufflers. My crate 350 is low compression with stock heads, 268 Comp cam, roller rockers, and mid length tube headers. I am not an engine builder but the engine performs to my satisfaction on 87 octane.

Can't help it, still like the sound of a mustang gt especially in a parking garage.

I will probably never own a Ford but one Ford I do like is a 68 mustang GT fastback with a 390 or better. I have not seen any in any Dallas nor Cincinnati car shows yet. I rode in a hyped 390 stick back when I was in high school and still remember the ride.

had a bassani off road x-pipe and flowmaster 40's on my old 02 GT best sounding car i ever owned, i like loud but i have to agree its in the engine not the exhaust that gives it that Mustang sound. have 40's on my truck and it sounds like a chevy.

Re: Exhaust sound of a mustang GT Cobra

Cam and compression ratio make a huge difference. Also different firing order.

I loved working at honda, can I make this cruiser sound like a harley? Just start talking about twin pin cranks and watch their eyes glaze over lmao. Oh you just meant loud, yeah that's easy.

Re: Exhaust sound of a mustang GT Cobra

The F355 I drove was a very small V8.....like a 3.5L or 218ish CI. My point is that when you get the cylinders, cubic inch that small with that much power, they start sounding more like a high end road bike than a high end car. That also helps them rev to the moon.

Actually it would be four wires and re- producing a boxer engine would still be hard to do

Yeah, but I was just going for the sound.

This is coming from someone who has owned 17 Subarus and could probably assemble an EA82 engine in pitch darkness, so it's no knock on Subaru.

Really? Really? You want to sound like a Mustang? WTF
I'd rather sound like a Healthy Chevy V8.
Pretty sad when a Chevy guy wants to sound like a Ford, pretty Damn Sad.

One main reasons they have "that sound" is their firing order combined with the exhaust system.

I have a 2012 GT that I think sounds great in stock form. It's funny though you browse the Mustang forums and it seems like a lot of guys want to change the exhaust.
