first time roof chop?

looking for some advice on taking 2-3 inches out of the top on my 85 c-10. I am no expert when it comes to working metal. I'd say my skills are average. How difficult is this to do? Any help and advice is greatly. Appreciated.

Re: first time roof chop?

I would suggest getting an old cab to practice on ;your first one will be hard to keep square and level.
And then there is trying to get the doors to fit.
And cut and fit the glass.

No reason why you cant do it;but I would not want to chop the roof on my good truck as a first time project;you may run aground and end up scrapping the truck or having to get another cab.

Re: first time roof chop?

well I'm just another non expert. but i have been a welder/ fabricator for over 15 years. I replaced the entire roof on my burb last year. it was somewhat of a pain. I learned that no amount of expierience in general fab equals what guys that specialize in chopping up cars have. its a different thing. I most certainly would not chop my cab. I would chop a cab. Then when you got it dialed. Its just a cab swap. I would personally start with two spare cabs. Due to the increase in roof length. The windshield of a square body lays at almost 45deg. this combined with the flat roof and a vertical drop . make a near perfect, equal leg right triangle. So each inch down would be an inch gained in roof length. 3 in. down. therefore 3in. forward. this is why i would use two cabs.the front roof of one and the rear roof of another. letting the two overlap in the center, with some trim. then scribe the cut line. the other option is to lay the windshield back. I think that looks terrible.

Re: first time roof chop?

If you feel your skills are average then you may want to pass on this one.

I chopped the top on mine 2". I think it is just the right amount. All stock glass except the windshield and they aren't too expensive to cut.

Not sure what page it starts on but you can find some photos in my build thread.

Re: first time roof chop?

Thanks everyone great advice and great information. Still on the fence about the project. Have to get some work done on the ok ladies 56 first or I'll be stuck doing my own laundry. If i do it I'll document and post it.

Re: first time roof chop?

I would agree with you when it comes to the ones that are chopped 6 inch or more. Ol' boy here in town has one with just a couple taken out and looks good.

Because if you can make a vehicle look better without most people actually knowing why...then the modification worked flawlessly.
