Why did you relocate your gas tank?

There are plenty of threads around about how everyone relocated their gas tank, but what I'd like to hear from everyone is WHY did you choose to relocate it? Was it for aesthetic reasons? Saftey? Weight transfer? More cab room? Just for the hell of it?

Everyone chime in! Heck, if you chose to keep it stock, then chime in as well! Let's here it.

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

the ones I have done for friends they wanted more cab room, storage space, a larger fuel tank & they didn't like the idea of having a Bomb in the Box.....

I just did it because it was what all the cool kids were doing........just kidding mine was already moved (okie rigged) to the inside of the bed by my dad in the early 90's(wal mart boat gas tank under the tonneu cover) I would have moved it anyway and since i dont want it seen i moved it under the bed . but back to the question i relocated it for storage/stereo room , oh yeah saftey too

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

Is it really that unsafe to have the tank in the cab? Assuming it's a new tank and no rust/leaks?

Not really unless you get T-bones right in the gas tank area. Then I would worry. Just be sure all your hose are new & fit properly & have a new gasket on the sending unit..I just perfer to have the tank as far away from me as I can...joe

I know a guy that had a friend who rolled his truck and was traped inside for a few hours before anyone found him. The truck was a 72 chevy, and gas from the tank started to spill out on him. With the gas on his skin for such a long time his skin started blistering. He ended up with burns all over arms and back, not from fire, but from the gas on his skin.

To answer why? I moved mine for safety, gas smell and mostly more room.

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

I have never heard of a truck blowing up because of the tank in the cab. That being said, my wife didn't share the same level of comfort I did.

My main reason for moving the tank was that I hated the sound of gas sloshing back and forth and I used to get a slight smell of gas in the cab. A couple of other reasons (in order of priority) were more space and aesthetics.

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

Tank needed to be replaced and thought the extra room would be good.

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

I had two reasons actually. 1 - I had the door handles shaved with remote door poppers and the gas filler sticking out just behind the drivers door looked completely out of place and took away from that clean look. 2 - larger fuel capacity. I put in a 110 litre gas tank in the back for better range and it has the lines for if I ever decide to put in a new generation EFI small block.

I can't stand not being able to put crap behind the seat, that's why I want to move mine.

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

I try to put as much of the weight to the rear axle to equalize
the weight distribution a little bit and to get ( maybe ) a little
bit more traction, when I hit the pedal.

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

I read another story on here from someone who had rolled his truck and was pinned in it. He said that he almost drown in the gas.

As for me, I am going stock for now. It is a upgrade for the future but I am getting eager to see mine move under it's own power!

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

I got tired of the fumes. I'm sure I could've fixed the leaks, but seriously, the above reasons are plenty for anyone. My space will now house amp, the subs and 6X9's.

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

I relocated mine to make room for some better stereo sound, & cause I build fuel tanks on the side for local folks, to support my hobby, would'nt make sense to make tanks for others & not have a custom tank of my own.

Re: Why did you relocate your gas tank?

I don't think you could go wrong moving the tank to anywhere else than the cab. The space for stoage and SUBS is bonus after the safety factor. I will do it myself when I know the gas tank straps aren't the only thing holding up my cab. Just a MO rust thing. Actually my truck is from Iowa. Now resides in MO.

Weight and smell. The balloon on the vent line had burst and all the condensation went to the front windshield seal above the mirror. Ate it away from the inside out. Wish I had pics. Pre digital camera.

How on Earth did gasoline cause your roof to rust from the inside out? I have never met gas that lasted that long.
