Progress on 87 K30 project
Thought I would show the progress on my 87 K30 since I am back on it now. I had a bad accident last December and was in the hospital for months so that put a delay on this one.
It is a 87 K30, Turbo 400, 454 was replaced by previous owner with a Chevelle 396, 4.10 gears, etc etc. I'm doing a complete chassis rebuild. 4" Skyjacker lift, 572 GM crate engine, lockers front/back, new brakes & lines, POR 15 on whole frame, turbo 400 and NP205 rebuild, all new bearings/seals and a lot more that has kept me busy. The body came off my 85 C20 and on to the K30. I'm going to have a lot of parts to help somebody soon. Here are some pics of the start over a year ago. |

Re: Progress on 87 K30 project
nice tractors too! why did you want to start the body swap? I am guessing because this truck is the k30 so it is a 1 ton 4x4? Any problems with the big old 396 or was the 572 just added because it is so sweet! nice nice work !!!

Re: Progress on 87 K30 project
yes it is a 1 ton. I did the body swap because the white one has zero dents or rust while the blue one has the usual dents and a few rust spots. The blue one is very fixable with rockers, cab corners, a few little floor spots and a few little spots on the bed. My dad bought the white 85 C20 new. It was the heavy 3/4 ton, 4 speed, 350 and 3.73 gears.
The 396 in the truck was ok besides an oil leak. It has been bored .030 and rebuilt recently. It will most likely go in something else. I just wanted a 572. Silly I know and It cost me enough too. |

Re: Progress on 87 K30 project
very nice truck. What size lift is that? I know you mentioned 4", but it looks more like a 6". Whats the make of those rims and the size of those BFG's?
Keep the pictures coming, its looking awsome. |

Re: Progress on 87 K30 project
That is one of the nicest trucks I have seen around here in a long time. Even the newer stuff running around have cab corners and rockers gone on them. I've always wanted a really nice K30 like that, good job on making it look great. Who is doing the exhaust work? What size tires?

Re: Progress on 87 K30 project
I'll let someone else build the truck out of the parts. I'm getting burnt out the way it is. This is the third truck if you count my 71 K20 & 72 K20.
It is a Skyjacker 4" lift with the extra spring in front for the big block weight, but I think it looks highter than that also. I put bought the 33" BFG Mud tires because I figured I couldn't get the 35's on it with the square wheel openings. I think the 35's would fit now. I'll have to try a set of 35's from my older trucks and see. Might update to 35's in the future. I'm going to put 2-1/2" stainless exhaust but I haven't even purchased the mufflers yet. I need to get moving on that. |

I know the feeling of owning Series 30 Chevys. I've had 7, 3 were C-30, 3 were K30's, and my 88V-30 which has 12K on it! I haven't driven it much like my others but, it's a great feeling compared to driving my other trucks! Last edited by Dooley; 01-17-2007 at 08:10 PM. |

Re: Progress on 87 K30 project
Those are 33" BFG Mud TAs at the moment. 35" would have fit fine too.
This 87 is technically called a V30 also. I guess they did that before they went to the new body style. |

Re: Progress on 87 K30 project
Your truck looks like it coming together pretty quick! I love it. Would you mind taking a quick measurement for me? I need to know what it measures from the ground the the wheel well in front and back if you could. I just put what I was told were 4" springs up front but I think they are 6". Thanks for the help.
