C20 PWR Steering Attach Point
Attached is pictures of my 1967 Chevy C20 power steering power cylinder attach point & a reference picture. I did not notice the weld job until I cleaned for paint. (Picture has rust converter primer on it.)
My question is: do you think its safe? Not telling where to find another, unless you (someone out there) has one to sell and ship to me? R/ DJ |

Re: C20 PWR Steering Attach Point
If the part were to fail it could possibly lock up the steering, but it might just break free & you would have no power assist. Personally, I would replace it or replicate the part (if one can't be found). The part looks cast but could be fabricated out of mild steel with a little work. With that said, no telling how long it's been welded & it's still holding! I would replace for "peace of mind".

Re: C20 PWR Steering Attach Point
Bracket is simply bolted in place behind steering box.
Need to find replacement from salvage truck - key is finding 67 to 72 WITH Factory power steering. R/ DJ |

Re: C20 PWR Steering Attach Point
It's a 67 only part!
68 and up used the power steering gear box.No slave cylinder. 66 and under used the same bracket, but it is slightly smaller and won't fit the 67 frame. I have the complete 67 set-up I bought for my 64,C-10.This bracket is the only part that won't work on it! Mike. |

For those in the dark here, 67 and some 68 trucks ran an external assist cylinder like a 'vette.

The 64 SS Impala had it and I just took it all off. My part like this was bolted on and was part of the front sway bar mount so I left it installed for now til I find another mount.

Re: C20 PWR Steering Attach Point
Thank you Andy4639 for the feedback. I just don't know the true quality of weld and last time a front end broke on me, (tie rod assembly failed - broke), I only remember ending up in intensive care at hospital. That was years ago, but do not care to have anything remotely happen like that again. I am working a lead now on a salvaged replacement part, wish me luck.

Re: C20 PWR Steering Attach Point
As stated before these where used on early models. I hate them. I took the one off my 67 the same day I bought it years ago. Even at their best they lack in power to what a real power steering box has in my opinion. I'm not a purist either though so modifying one isn't a problem for me.
I can understand if you are going for show points though.

Not a "Purist" here either. But post divorce budget (& her debt pay-off, etc.) makes this rebuild just do what is needed to get it road worthy and safe.
Also, I found a replacement salvaged bracket in great shape for $30 (plus shipping). I'm happy with that. |
