Question Welding A Tailpipe/Echotips

Just how difficult is it? And can a wire welder be used or what? I got a quote from the only guy in town the other day and just about fell over when he says, "yeah, I could probably get it done for $200".

Now keep in mind, I have new tailpipe from the headers back to the Flowmasters and was dumped just behind the axle (prior owner's preference). So there's not much to be added once you figure in the length of the echotips.

I personally want the 3" echotips like I had back in high school. I like the melo tones that they give the exhaust. And if the Flowmaster's don't provide the right sound w/the echotips......they'll come off and I'll go find me some cherry bomb glasspacks!!

So what's the difficulty level w/this little project?

Sounds like that joker just doesn't want to fool with it. I just had 2.5" exhaust ran on my wifes 54 from the engine to the back bumper for $250. That included a set of fake flowmasters and having collectors welded on behind the mufflers so I could remove the tailpipes later.

Re: Welding A Tailpipe/Echotips

That's kind of what I was thinking. It's just sad though, he's the only one in town and the next closest one is nearly an hour away any direction. I figure that the tips are going to set me back about $30-40 and the rest would be labor.

But $200???? that's a bit steep in my opinion. I've known this guy most of my life, but never figured he'd be the type to try and lace his pocket like that. It's just a shame.

I've welded 1" square tubing making some hunting stands (wire welder) and 2.5" square tubing making hog traps (crackerbox welder), so I figure the exhaust piping shouldn't be much heavier right?

Wait.....did I say welded???.....maybe I should call it stuck. As my b-n-law says, "your a sticker right now, you'll be a welder someday....maybe". So I guess he's trying to say that my welds aren't real pretty. LOL!

Beside him being the only guy in town, did you just call him, or did you go by and show him what you wanted? If you didn't go see him and let him look at your truck, and your parts...of course he could get it done for around $200. But, it is also possible that he's not in the market of installing parts that people provide because he's also in business to sell you the parts you need/want. It's kinda like taking your own eggs and sausage to the cafe and asking them to cook them for you.....

If your truck is lowered, he's gonna be charging more for that. Running tailpipes over the rearend on a lowered truck is very difficult.

Re: Welding A Tailpipe/Echotips

Yes, I took it by for him to look at and we both crawled under together so I'd know we were both on the same page.

And the tailpipes are already over the rear axle, so he'd only have to make maybe a slight bend and then put on the tips. It's not that low, I can crawl my fat butt under from one side to the other at the doors.

That's why I was so shocked at the price.
