Lower Recommendations - Drop Spindle Front/4" Rear?

Hi Guys,

I am a new member, and just bought my first 64 Chevy. Its pretty stock, and now that its in my hands, I already want to start tweaking it. My first project is most likely add front disc with 2.5" drop spindles and 4" drop coils in the rear (or 3").

Can anyone share pictures of what this stance looks like on their truck? And what tires they are running with this stance? I know there is the static drop image gallery, but it seems most are lowered more than this degree.

Thanks

Also, since I am new to to the chevy crew, any other recommendations on fix/additions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Lower Recommendations - Drop Spindle Front/4" Rear?

What do you want to do with her? I like her the way she is actually!

If your wanting to drop her, 2.5" spindles, 1-2" springs for the front, then 4" springs or air bags in the back ( Air bags will allow you to tow something if you want to).

If you do the 2.5 sp and 4" rear, you r front will be higher a bit than the rear.

Also, you should swap your wheels up front for some 7" unless your going bigger wheels (17+)

Re: Lower Recommendations - Drop Spindle Front/4" Rear?

Like Clyde said do the front spindles then add air bags to the back, the rear bags are not much more expensive than new rear springs and they are adjustable........you can get the stance you want by just adjusting the bags instead of changing the springs.

I hate those electric compressors, slow , noisy, if you have room on the front of the engine look at doing a york compressor, quiet , fast, and cheapif you can find one used in good shape. Do the tank first with a solenoid valve. That way you can add air or let it out simply. I only air mine up once a week. about 120lbs. used a air tank off a freightliner mounted to the drivers side --outside of frame. cheap and easy........Kieth Then add the compressor later as the budget permits.

I cant add a york, I have an LS with AC so there isnt any room.

I do like the idea of the tank though.

Thank Keith!

Re: Lower Recommendations - Drop Spindle Front/4" Rear?

Mine was just like yours before this! the rear is lower because of the trailer weight, but you get the idea.
I have 2.5" spindles, 1.5" drop coil in front and Airbags with cup in back, I'm running 45-50 lbs of air.

Do you make the swap meets with that rig ? I'd be interested in checking out your truck some time. I've seen a lot of posts on here from you but not a picture of your truck until now.

I sometimes make a show/ swap meet. I live in far south Fort Worth, pretty much the opposite side of Ft Worth than you are TX firefighter. If your going to one let me know, I'm sure I need something from there. Any reason to drive the truck, i jump at it. I would very much like to meet and shake your hand.

Re: Lower Recommendations - Drop Spindle Front/4" Rear?

I have the same truck as the OP. I added 2.5 dropped front spindles with new stock height springs and 3 in drop in rear WITH air shocks. I have around 50 pounds in the air shocks. See my thread on el Palomito:

2 1/2 inch drop spindles and 4 inch springs in the rear. if you did that and then wanted to go lower, you can cut the front spring and make lowering blocks for the rear for cheap.

Re: Lower Recommendations - Drop Spindle Front/4" Rear?

Thanks everyone for the stellar insights and picks. I didn't even think about air. Figured it was two expensive and maintenance. Being a newbie, these could sound remedial, but what are the main difference in running air bags to air shocks? anything? How hard is it to adjust the height using air?

Also, I plan on going for the classic look of half moons and tires. Any recommendations of tires (7" or different) that would look good and drive well?

Re: Lower Recommendations - Drop Spindle Front/4" Rear?

This is a 2-4 with a spring only. A short bed may sit a little higher in the rear because it has less weight behind the axle. Tires are 225/75/15

With this drop, does your rear sit noticeably higher than your front? Also, any clearance issues underneath?

Re: Lower Recommendations - Drop Spindle Front/4" Rear?

I set up at the swap meets with Shaneschevys and his bunch. Mainly Decatur spring and fall and Pate. I'm always out there but I don't take selling very seriously. Mainly I like to socialize with folks and ride my little motorcycle around after hours. And sit in the shade, .....and socialize.

My dad goes to Decatur every year, he makes and sells antique chevy parts. A lot older than ours. When is the next one? I'll do my best to get there and let you know before.
