Kissing the wall
For the first time in 35 years the truck had an accident
The front passenger tire blew out at 55 MPH on I-215 SB one mile before the 6200 S exit in Salt Lake City. We were in the right lane. After it blew I struggled to keep it going straight...did a decent job but the truck was stronger than me. Only kissed the concrete Jersey barrier for 125 feet. The Jersey barrier is a smoother surface to hit as it sits directly in front of one of those Decorative 12 foot sound barrier walls. So probably doing about 25 when hit the wall. Thank goodness the barrier was there or we may have been down over an embankment. Just me and my boy...completely OK.

Re: Kissing the wall
So GM still makes these fenders...I thought it was all aftermarket like Tri Plus and some other place.

No, GM no longer produces body panels for these trucks (although I have heard it is possible to still get inner fenders and stepside tailgates from GM still???)

Re: Kissing the wall
glad to hear you're both alright. looks like the tire had lots of tread left on it, did you run over something in the road or did it just blow out ? if it just blew out, i'd be talking to big-o about helping with the repairs on my truck.

Re: Kissing the wall
Truck needs a new fender, bumper and aluminum grill. Rad support is OK, hood not damaged.
The tires are I think 20 years old. My fault for not changing them sooner. No warning...nothing in the road...just brhbrhsbhrbrhsbhrbhrbshbsh....crunch.

Re: Kissing the wall
Looks like the tread separated from the tire casing. That's the problem that they were having with those Chianese tire that were in the news several weeks ago. The problem tires were for light trucks. I would look into it.

Re: Kissing the wall
Frame...visually the frame is good.
The bumper mounting brackets gave way...as designed. I know this so far as there is no cracked or deformed undercoating/dirt/rust in that area.

Re: Kissing the wall
Glad you and your son are alright. That is my biggest fear - blow-out on a front tire at 70 mph, followed closely by spontaneous combustion (for some reason I have a fear that the truck will catch on fire while driving down the road). I got my truck in 2004 when my Dad passed. I have no idea how old the tires were when I got it. Probably best to just change them out.
