Rear Disk brake kits? Which one?

Ok how many people have rear disk brakes and which ones? How hard of install? Direct bolt on? Performance? Looks?

I seen a Wilwood kit in Summit for 12 bolt for 620.00. Is this kit good?

Reumster, I will tell you what I have been told about rear disc brakes as I wanted to install a kit on my truck at one time. I the folks at Chevy Duty, Early Classics and my local 67-72 collector guy all tell me that the rear disc on 2wd c10's was not the way to go. It seems that even with different proportioning valves they could never get the brakes to work correctly. The would either lock up or put all the load on the front brakes. The guys at Early Classic strongly recommended not doing it. I was bummed! I know Mudder and a couple of guys have disc on their 4bys with no trouble. So, if you are doing this on a 4wd that would probably work. Just the .02 I have heard and I don't want to rain on your parade. If you do go ahead and do the switch let me know how it turns out.

I've heard the same thing about the rear disc. I'd go with the praisedyno pads and springs on the rear and call it a day. You could do their drums too if you do a lot of heavy loads/towing. I know I'll be doing praise pads and shoes as soon as my first set of pads wears out.

I also agree on the rear disc, the @ss end of these trucks are too light. On my longhorn, with disc front/drum rear, If I lock up the brakes......the rears lock first. I had also looked at the rear disc,they look slick as h*ll........but dont really need them. CrazyL

A few members here have used the disc setup from a 79' Lincoln Mark 5, they have 9" rear with discs AND Chevy 5 lug 5" bolt pattern!

that's the setup that i have. stainless steel brakes make a kit for the rear. i was looking at getting their force 10 for the front but they're pretty expensive and you have to run 17" wheels i think.

crazy longhorn: you should install an adjustable proportioning valve to solve your rear locking up first problem.



the thing with rear disc is that your front brakes need to be better than the rear. better calipers/pads/rotors, etc. should be used. there's debate on if slotted/cross drilled rotors are actually better or not.

Nate68, an adjustable valvemay be the ticket,as that old truck is a looong booger! i have moved some weight back(battery to the rear, eng setback on I6 stands), & also plan to move the fuel tank to the rear to help......it has serious traction issues too! How do the Ford brakes work for you?

i have a fuel cell in the back, engine is in 6cyl location, the 9" is a heavy mofo, a lot heavier than the 12 bolt that was in there. i'm running larger tires in the back than the front.

Anybody ever used Master Power Brakes?
I see they have a rear disk set-up for a 12 bolt.

I have mine all planned out, Eldo 12 inch rears, adjustable prop valve and NO power. Rear discs need to be adjusted to 30%. They lighter, less fade, and give better feed back. There not bad on the bank account either.

Yeah I heard that the Early Classic kit was a nightmare. But I still think with a good quality kit, and most likely a adjustable valve they'ed be the ticket. Drums just don't have anyplace on a truck with big wheels. And I plan on 20's soon.

rear disc

I have been running the Lincoln rear end for a couple of years. No problems at all. I have the corvette style master and the stock 75 c-10 proportioning valve. The front brakes are 75 c-10.

rear disks

I installed rear disks on my 72 Blazer 4X4. I used the kit from TSM. The kit was easy to install after I got all the parts together. Steve Chin had a detailed description of the installation on his website that included ordering information for e-brake cables etc.

i am using a 82 1/2 ton proportioning valve (i did the front suspension swap) 75 or 76 corvette master cylinder, 67-72 3/4 ton booster and wilwood adjustable proportioning valve.

I'd still like to see if anyone uses the Wilwood kit in Summit? I could have sworn that I seen a guy with them on this board?

Isn't the kit from Early use the Caddy stuff?
