Need Help
In my 62 I have a 350 and for some reason it dies after two minutes of running. Its getting fuel and spark, although theres some oil on the threads of the plugs when I took them out. Anyone got any ideas of what this is happening?

What are the other symptoms? Hard start? Oil smoke? Poor idle? Sorry but your first post doesn't give much information. If you could try to describe what the engine does, and how it is running when it is running. The oil can most likely be coming from worn valve stem seals (very common in older Chevy engines).

the start is fine. I dont have a choke on my carb so it takes a while in the mornings and the idle isn't too bad I mean the truck shakes quite a bit at stop lights but thats about it. But the engine will be running then just slowly start to sputter and then die. and then wont start for about a minute after. I've just got a standard distributor nothing special and im not sure about the cfm on the carb, i do know its a four barrel.

have you done a compression test? Is it a points type distributor, or a later HEI style? before you go and replace any parts, check out all your existing hardware (if you haven't already). Makes sure all of your electrical connections are good and clean, and that you fuel flow is as it should be. If you have a clear fuel filter, look and see if the carb is running itself out of fuel. When was the last time the fuels filter was replaced? Take off the distributor cap and make sure the contact points are clean and in good shape. After a good inspection you may get a better idea of what the problem could be. It could all be as simple as just needing a good tune up. Points could need adjusting or replacing. I have also seen problems similar to this with coils going bad. It's kind of rare because usually when coils go they just quit, but it does happen. If you're running HEi, it could be the module responding to heat. I have seen some of the HEI modules quit working once they get warm, then need to cool of before starting again (my mom's '83 Suburban did this all the time). The carb could be having needle and seat issues, or possibly a sticking float. Or you may have a loss of compression due to worn rings, could explain the shakes too. I know it's not a very specific answer, but hopefully it helps get you in the right direction. . |

Have you changed anything on the truck lately or did this problem come up suddenly with all the components having been the same for awhile?

Yep...
Standard Checks Fuel Filter. Carb. Distributor Timing. Plugs. Coil.... If you have one. Dry or wet coil. They wet coils get hot sometimes and stop working. You just have to trouble shoot. You might want to step up to a H.E.I. On that 350. Oil on the spark plugs may be leaky valve guides or rings. Could be leaking from valve covers too. Your best is to do a compression test. Also see if there is trash in the tank. Might be getting on the pick up and then drops off after it dies.

I recently experienced the same problem. The factory strainer on the end of the fuel sending unit pickup tube was clogged. We removed it and put a fuel filter on the soft line, just before the fuel pump. Prior to doing so, the coil, cap, wires, distributor lead, points, rotor, condenser, voltage regulator & alternator were replaced, but it still wouldn't stay running after the initial warm-up. After removing the strainer on the fuel sending unit and installing the inline fuel filter, forward of the fuel pump, she starts and runs great.
This sounds impossible, but it did solve the problem. |
