tv cable, carb spacer

So, my truck was kicking down a gear going up hill kinda early in my opinion. Put in a 2" carb spacer, now it kicks down with hardly any pressure on the accelerator. So, I looked up the procedure for adjusting the tv cable, but couldn't find what tab you pull out before you open the throttle. Nothing I found online made sense with what I had going on. This morning, I was going up a hill, it kept kicking down a gear, and shifting back up. Figured if I floored it, at least it would stay in the lower gear and make it up the hill. Just kept dropping down, and shifting back up. Any tips on adjusting this?

Is it a TH350 or 700-R4? If it is a 350, there is a clip that pops up right behind the bracket if you press from underneath. If it is a 700-R4, there is a D-shaped pad on the bottom that you press and hold while moving the throttle to WOT.

Thanks. Not sure which it is. Truck came with 4 speed according to build tag. I'll check if it has the clip or the pad, thanks.

It's a "button" of sorts on the 700r4 that looks like a capital D. Push it in and hold it. Push the nose of the TV cable all the way towards the firewall. Let go of the D button. Get inside your truck, and put the throttle to the floor. You should hear some clicks, and that will set it.

All of that with the engine off, of course. Have to say it... because you know some people will try it the other way around.

Looks like we all jumped on that one pretty quick...

I can't find a clip or a D shaped button to push. Since the tranny isn't original, it had a manual, what other options could the cable be?

Really need to know if it's a TH350 or a 700r4. Or at least some pix of what you're working with?

How do you tell which tranny it is?

Easy way is look at the pan. Does it look like a big square? Or does it look like a square with a corner cut off it at an angle?

ever owned a bicycle? ever had to adjust the brake cable? same concept im sure. never adjusted one before, just follow the cable down to the transmission and take a look see.... but dont drive that truck without the trans cable connected. it will not supply adequate hydraulic pressure and can torch a transmission... adjust the linkage before you either blow it up from popping around the gears at high speeds or not connecting the cable and smoking a tranny.....

He's got a TH350... not a 700r4. That thing will survive forever without the kickdown cable attached. Nothing to be concerned about. I had one behind my 6.2 diesel before I swapped it out for the 700r4, and I drove it for over 2000 miles without the kickdown attached.

Anyway, if you do get a chance to snap a picture of what your cable looks like, someone should be able to figure out how to adjust it.

th350 adjust's pump pressure via the kick down cable's pulled position, a disconnected kick down cable will show an"at idle" condition constantly.

Thats how a 700-R4 functions. The TH350 uses a vacuum modulator instead and the cable is just for kickdown.

Thanks for the backup guys. Do your own homework when it comes to transmissions. That's why I put the explanation of WHY it isn't necessary when I said that you can drive without it connected. You think a TH350 would survive for over 2000 miles without the kickdown attached if it depended on it like the 700r4 does with the TV cable? Prove to me why I was able to do that then. All the kickdown does on a TH350 is open up extra valves when you "floor the throttle" to create more pressure to get the transmission to downshift. At normal throttle position, it isn't doing anything for the transmission. It is not necessary AT ALL to everyday driving operations. I know the differences between the two transmissions. End rant.

I am interested in this also. I just bought a spacer to put under my Holley. It is only a little over 1/2". Will I have to adjust the kick?

If it is a 700r4 and the cable isn't adjusted right you'll be buying a new transmission.

I think a previous owner converted it to automatic, so the kickdown cable wouldn't have been there before. Who knows what it came off of...
