camshaft combo
Hey.. engine is broke back down.. just put in a new crank/bearings..etc with 40 over pistons.. compression is 9:1 with 202/160 heads 64cc
I have a solid cam here that's .512/.536, and 262/273@ .o50... Rockers are 1.5's.. Will this cam be ok? Is it going to make decent power? Also running a 4 speed w/ 4:11 rear Need more info? Posted via Mobile Device |

Going in a 350? That's a pretty snotty cam if it's in a small block. You'll need headers, and not to mention an intake and carb setup that will match that cam.
What heads specifically, and who is the maker of the cam? Gary

Wow, That's an aweful lumpy cam for a truck.
You can run it, but wow it would be better at home in a stout bracket car. If you do, make sure you have the proper springs installed and screw-in studs. Run only 93+ octane and a matching carb/intake and distributor. The stock GM HEI is only good to about 6k, this cam will go 7K easy. You will need a MSD 6AL and matching coil for your dizzy. The gears and tranny are great for this cam. I do have one question... You stated 9:1 CR with 64cc heads.... Are you planning on a blower or turbo? Where did you get those pistons?

Springs are fine for it..x2 checked with manufacturer.. I am planning on running a turbo 6-10psi.. and didn't want to buy pistons twice (flats to run while saving for turbo) so I got said pistons. Manley I believe.. small dish 4 valve relief from a local shop. (Good guy)

If you are definitely planning on going with a turbo then a turbo specific cam would be better. If you are going to run it without a turbo for a while then the compression may be down with that big a cam. Remember valve overlap bleeds off cyl pressure.

Ok... I get worried when people post about such a lumpy cam.. I don't how many I have pulled out of engines because some gommer wanted to fast and the parts guy sold him a drag racing cam for a truck. And then the CR you posted was leading me to that conclusion.
Awesome... this thing is going to be a bat out of hell. Just make sure you have strong spark the HEI is good with a 6AL and big coil.

It will run fine. May be a little ( alot) dumpy at low RPMs. Gonna get horrible milage.

Lol.. I know low end power will be $#it... but I just want er to run for now.. a new can with the turbo won't be a prob.. just don't have it to buy a new one till I get my back pay from the v.a.

I have a older 6Al... just need the coil... hei for now. . But it for sure isn't staying n/a.. like I say.. Santa is bringing a turbo kit. love my wife and thank Christ for the blessings.

All that info about a turbo and the MSD box would have been a lot more help in your opening post.
You need to be careful when picking cams for turbos. If you're too aggressive then the turbo won't be able to work as efficient. What is a "good intake and carb"? You're going to have a top end spinning fire breathing monster. Make sure your bottom end is stout, and you have forged pistons as well. Gary

Pistons and rods are forged... crank isn't.but its new.. with all new bearings. Everything on the bottom is new. And hopefully will hold up on this combo.. the only thing I was doubting was running this cam until I turbo this winter. Specs match up for everything to hold up top.. but just didn't know how it would perform

Edelbrock carbs make good door stops. Nobody making power with any kind of engine uses and Edelbrock carb. Stick with the Holley... you'll be glad you did.

The dish isn't too bad.. just double checking with the motorheads. That I can run around till then...
Not a "slam a huge cam in it with low comp guy"... if it wasn't safe to run it till Xmas... I wouldn't.. . But since its ok... I probably wouldn't mind busting a gt's ass around town.... got a 03 gt guy with a exhaust running his moith .. think he has a diablo tuner and a "cold air"...... Other than that.. just checking.. I've built it compression. Wise for my turbo.. that's coming... in the winter... Just anxious to at least drive around till then.. school is just down the road and I haven't had a decent ride since I sold my pro charged camaro... This is my dream car.. "truck" before my dad left which was when I was just old enough to remember his face... he had a 72 in the driveway and I would sit in it and play... Ready for reality Posted via Mobile Device |

The stealth intake is idle to 6k... I think. Your going to need something that will flow clean to 7500 with that cam. The heads and intake need to be port-matched as well to flow right.
The problem we have here is not your plan... you have a good one. But there is a lot that goes in to building an engine like you are. With forced induction, I'm a little leary of a cast crank. There is a lot of extra tortional activity going on at high torque high RPM high boost situations. Your block needs to be 4 bolt mains as well and perferably splayed mains and a windage tray is manatory. you also need to stud the engine to make sure it stays together. This engine really needs to be bullet proof due to the cam and turbo. Otherwise you will be collecting destroyed parts off the street and placing them in the bed while waiting for a tow home.
