Aluminum Gas Tanks - Group Buy ends May 9, 2008

UPDATE 29 May 08 - pictures added of my tank.... check end of thread..

PURCHASED MINE TODAY< TANK #2 WAS $340 SHIPPED, SAME PRICE FOR EVERYONE>>>> Much more of a discount than I had planned. Even if you aren't in on this group he will give you the best price that I have found. Don't let my "end date" scare you off....Thanks..
.

UPDATE: 3-4 purchases being planned so far...
Just added change #1 plans, decided to make it shorter to stay behind my reese hitch, with these measurements it will alomst be invisible from the back. Also decided to switch to the cap under the wood floor. I'll post the updated price for tank #2 tomorrow.

OK, here's the scoop... I followed a link that another board member provided to a Florida Welding shop that makes custom aluminum tanks and has free shipping. After seeing the prices on their website I decided to design a tank for my K-10.

So the non-discounted price for just my tank to be fabricated and delivered to my house is $384, that includes being pressure tested, fill tube (or cap), hole for common 1.5" sending unit ($30 extra from most sites) and i'm ready to install. Any changes to my plans and you can expect the price to change. Small changes like filler location shouldn't affect it much, if any though. Fuel Injection will raise for sure. Mounting flanges have no holes do that you can drill your own for your frame. I designed mine so that it won't require any mods to the bed crossmember. I have already removed my spare tire bracket as well...

If you are interested (and are serious) then check out my plans below and see what changes need to be made to yours. Fax those changes to Dave at Boyds Welding (http://www.boydwelding.com/) and tell him that's its the group buy with Michael Gross. No discounts apply until we confirm, and pay, for our tanks. I'm not making money on this, only hoping to save us all some... I'm ordering my tank on 9 May so that's why there is an end date. Dave might be able to help others out after that date as well....

Here are some specs that he sent me...

Mike,

Thank you for the opportunity to offer our quote to you! Here is the info you requested.

Fuel Tank dimensions 27.25 x 17 x 10-13 built per your drawing will cost $384.00 shipped to your door. this tank will be built from .125 5052-H32 smooth aluminum approx gallons is 20. Lead time for fabrication is 10-14 business days from the time of order to the time of shipment.

i will be able to work on a price break with multiple orders please give me the opportunity to quote them out before you let anyone know what the price will be as it can vary from tank to tank.

below is all of my contact information please contact me with any questions.

Thank You

That sounds like a good price. Can it be built with an intank EFI pump? Might be good to find out what the up-charge would be for that. I have built several tanks from Alum, S.S. to good old mild steel and I know I would charge alot more than that per unit.

I mentioned EFI to him on the phone and he said that they could do it, but the price does jump quite a bit. Can't hurt to give him a call and get some real numbers though... He will custom build all our tanks and give us a group discount accordingly once all orders are placed...

Would the "group" need to go to one addy?Or,is it a matter of repitition of one design shipped wherever?I know, this is making work for you. But,this helps me feel better about where my tax money is going.

Good question Tim...

"group" just means we are all doing "some" kind of business with this welder. He will build and ship each tank to each person as they need, doesn't have to be my design. I think his prices are the lowest i've seen as it is, so I am going to buy one. If you want a monster "fill up the bed" gas tank then your price will higher, but we all benefit with the more business that he gets from my contact... I don't know what the discount is until more people commit to buying....

Uncle Sam pays me 24/7 remember, so my R&D is at your tax dollars expense! So is my time in the sack or on the toilet....lol

plans posted... I believe that he will have baffles to prevent fuel sloshing as well, i'm confirming that though. I also need to confirm the fill location to insure that it falls in the middle of the wood bed board.

Mike,

I'm in for sure. I'm just trying to decide on a side filler location. I'll be giving David a call next week after I finalize my measurements this weekend.

ok, shannon,i'll send you the powerpoint file that I used with the drawing. You can change the numbers or locations and fax it to him. Might want to include a pic from the board to be sure that he is clear on your plan.

So is the filler location for your particular design going to be in the bed floor? I was either going to do one from the bed floor, or through the tail light. Mine too would be for a K10. Wife hates having the tank behind the seat. I'm in the process of collecting parts so I can start a build this summer.

I'm planning on either one of the filler methods below (one would have a cap on the tank, the other will have a hose to the neck), either way i'm taking the easiest route and placing it in the bed of the floor. Only issue is that you have to lean over the tailgate to fill it up, or drop the gate. My truck isn't going to be that high and i'm 6'3" to it shouldn't matter. Then you have the chance of spilling gas on your wood bed during fill-up.

I called about stainless, they said the price of SS has gone through the roof and it would probably be 3 times the money to build...

Re: Aluminum Gas Tanks - Group Buy ends May 9, 2008

added change #1 plans, decided to change some measurements...

Here is a mock up that I did this afternoon.... 17" front to back, 27" wide, 11" tall in back and 12.5" in front.

I decided to make mine 8" in the back so that it's hidden/protected behind my reese hitch which sits just under the bumper....

Re: Aluminum Gas Tanks - Group Buy ends May 9, 2008

I have one more question. I'm looking at your mock-up, is the tank going to be hanging low enough that it will be the "focus of attention" so to speak if someone is behind you. I guess I'd like to know if it'll be out of sight or not. I guess a guy could always put some black coating on it to blend into the surroundings. Bottom line is, I need a tank and appreciate all you've done to mock it up, submit drawings, etc. This makes it easy. What's your new option for fill cap? Will you have an access door now? What do I need to do to be "in" on the deal? Thanks

Re: Aluminum Gas Tanks - Group Buy ends May 9, 2008

send me a pm with your email address and i'll send you the powerpoint slide that I used, you can adjust numbers to fit your truck as needed.

The mock up tank is 3" lower than what i'm making now. It should be barely visible but you could paint it black or undercoat it to hide it better. I'm taking the easy route and using a vented cap with an access door in the floor. My filler is offcenter since I have a wood floor. Steel floor could be centered along as you miss your crossmembers.

If you want to have one made then fax the drawing that you want to Dave Boyd at the fax number above and give him a call. Shannon (sdailey) is having a side filler neck made on his...
