Who Has/Wants Rear Disk Brakes? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am gathering information on rear disk brakes. Who of you have them on your trucks? What I have found so far is I need the following parts:

1. Rear disk brake kit (rotors, calipers, caliper brackets, rubber brake hose kit and all mounting hardware.)

2. Disc/disc proportioning valve

3. Rear disk brake hoses

4. Rear disk emergency brake cable

Are these the exact parts I need? Are there any more? Do I need another master cylinder or booster? Who has the best prices. I have a front disk conversion on my truck which works great. After my 700r4 is installed I want to work on my rear brakes. Please let me know.

I don't know if this will help, but just a suggestion: There is a page in the FAQ last I looked and it had a full rundown on the disc conversion for the rear of a truck. There are some bolt-in plates you can get to make it all work right. Someone even put pictures of the install on their truck.

You should use a disc\disc master. Also Rubber brake hose kit and rear disc brake hoses should be one and the same.

I bought my kit from ccp, the kit came with (everything) but,,,,,brass adapters for the lines to the new hoses, bought the prop valve from ccp, and bought the master cyl from master power brakes, its a pain in the butt to bleed the rears and ensure there adjusted properly but after they are on and working, it feels like I took off 500 lbs from the rear end and it stops on a dime.....

I put a disc brake rear out of a car into mine. Pro's to that was having parts available at any parts store and having a style of disc and caliper that matched the front. I also changed the way the lines ran. Instead of having 3 flex lines (one from Frame to rear end, 2 from rear end to each caliper) i routed the lines around the frame ran a flex line from the frame to each caliper.

Low69, just curious about your rear. What did you do for brackets to mount the calipers, and what rear end do you have. I would love to have four wheel disks, but am not willing to shell out hundreds for the brackets. I could cut my own brackets out of steel, but simply don't have time to design and play around with it right now.

My 12 bolt is being rebuilt with custom rear caliper brackets made by a board member. I am using 1972 Blazer front calipers in the rear. I was told it should accept a Cadillac brake rotor of some kind, any idea which years may work?

I'll have the axle assy back very soon and will take some measurements.

Walker,
I used the rear out of a 74 Chrysler Imperial 440. It had a 9.25" stump and 12" discs. I like the big discs and the big ring gear since I got a big motor. Bad parts are it has a 4.5" bolt circle and the rotors are discontinued. My rotors were good, so i'm fine for now, and I got the bolt pattern redrilled to the truck pattern. All the disc brackets are the original stuff. I did custom brake lines to make it work. If you want I have alot of hi-res pictures I can email you if you want to see them.

I bought a 9" ford disk brake axle at the local pic-a-part $150 complete... rotors, calipers, parking brakes. It came off of a Lincoln. I bought it for my stock car, but I wouldn't hesitate to use one on a truck. Nine inch fords are real strong, changing gears is easy, and parts for them are less expensive than any other type axle.

I used a disc rear out of a 1979 cadillac fleetwood. It has the same bolt pattern as the 79 five lug front end I used but I did have to weld some mounts on it for thetrailing arms. As for brake lines I used the ones on the caddy rearend even the flex hose to the frame it hooked right up. I used the prop valve off the caddy since it was four wheel disc. I used the original manual master on the truck but it's about to be changed to power with a different master.

I have something that i found that ill share with yall....Its a web site that gives you steps on how to change to rear disc and what parts to use. i have not went through the steps on my truck yet but from this does not sound tooo bad, I just need to get me the mounting plates or templets so i can make my own brakets. here yall go guys hope it helps.

I have done a little research so far. I haven't purchased a bracket yet, but I have looked up the prices and part numbers to probably make this work. With a little digging on the internet, I was able to find out what caliper/rotors, brake hose and such. These are all Napa part numbers, with current prices

2x--Caliper--80-85 Cadillac Seville with E-Brake--46.49 ($25+ with core charge)
2x--Rotors--80-85 Cadillac Seville--TS4885977--$27.99
2x--Brake hose--Left/Right Rear-4136961--$11.69

Since I haven't moved forward with the kit build up, I belive you need brake cables for the emergency brake. Those part numbers are

RR--93429--$32.49
LR--93292--$29.99

Hopefully this helps someone else out.

One thing I forgot to mention, these kits sell for $600-$700. If you don't mind sourcing out the brackets, you can put together a pretty similiar kit for $350.00.

Thats my plan at least....

I bought machining templates for the caliper brackets off eBay. It includes the templetes for two plates per side, a couple expolded views of the assembly, and a bill of materials required. My issue is that the kit was designed for 6-lug and I have 5x5. I just need to find rotors I can use. I'd scan them in for you guys, but they are 11x17 and I have a feed through scanner.

They call out:

'88 4x4 1/2t front rotor
'83 Camaro rear calipers
'88 S10 front pads

I have the demensions of the rotors they mention, so I'll just match those in a five-lug version.
