e fans
My truck is a 64 and i need to run electric fans on it was wondering who is running them, what you are running for fans and how you mounted them. Looking for ideas thanks for the help

Hey Chris,
I used 2-11" SPAL fans like this: http://www.a1electric.com/Merchant2/..._Code=30102052 I built an aluminum frame from 1-1/2" angle to mount the fan assembly. Then the frame fastens to the existing 6 screws that held the old shroud on. No modifications to the truck were required and nothing fastens or touches the radiator. The fans work great. I have a controller that runs one fan at two speeds depending on temperature then turns the second fan on at higher temp when needed. They are out of the truck right now for an engine change so if you want a better pic. of the frame let me know. TR

Heyas..
I run a fan out of a 3.8L ford taurus. These are a two speed fan and they compete with any aftermarket setup for a fraction of the cost. They are said to pull 4500cfm on high speed. I can tell you they cool my big block chevelle with no problems. Very common at any pick and pull, make sure its a 3.8L and not a 3.0. They pull high current when they first start so I use a high amp relay for high speed and a 30amp for low speed. If you find a junk yard fan the complete setup wont cost more than 100$, if you really want to get trick you can put a temp sensor in to kick on the high speed but I wired in the ignition to low and if I am in a slow cruise I swop it to high with a toggle. Been using these for a long time, they are very popular with the off road guys and ford guys for different conversions. Remember 3.8L and they are a 9 blade. They are a tad over 5' thick but can be cut down to 4 if needed. You can google taurus fan conversion and get alot of diagrams/etc. If you have questions send a PM. GL I should add from a 1990 and up taurus to 95 I think, probably the most common car in the pick and pulls across the country. That spal fan is nice would work perfect. I have heard of the ford fans befor I might go to the local pick-a-part this weekend and see what i can find.

Yes the aftermarket fans are nice, I chose to go this route after I ran one. I had it face down in the garage on the floor and I wired up the high speed and it was pulling so much it sucked a washer over to the edge from a foot away.. flat on the concrete.. This is what you are looking for..

23 wide 18 high and a bit over 5 thick, easily cut down to 4 if needed. In my big block it covers less than 2/3 of the radiator and I run highway speed at 170, slow cruises on a 100 degree day I have gotten up to 195.. Yet to see 200. This is with a stock radiator in a chevelle. My 60 has a 292.. with a stock 6cyl radiator I havent seen 170 but havent had her out in any real heat yet over 90 degree's anyhow.
I use Bosch relay 0332002150 75 AMP Dual contact TYCO for high speed and any 30 amp relay for low will do fine.. You will have about 40$ in relays.. The 75 amp one sells for like 25$ on ebay.. very cheap compared to what I could find locally. Last edited by 72bigred; 09-21-2009 at 12:59 AM. |

I am also running the same taurus fan. It doesnt cover the whole radiator but its good enough. The Lincoln Mark VIII and T Bird fans are slightly bigger and pull more air. I believe the 97 is the year to get, other years will work as well IIRC. Im using a 2 speed volvo relay and a audi/vw thermo switch. Low speed on @ 190 and high @ 200.

I'm running a Flexalite Black Magic fan. It comes with an adjustable thermostat switch. It only covers about 2/3 of the radiator, but with a manual transmission it holds a constant termperature during the summer months.
When I had an automatic trans and either an external cooler in front of the radiator, or running through the bottom tank - it was not sufficient. If I got stuck in traffic on a hot day it would overheat. Flexalite now makes a dual fan setup that I would have installed, but it wasn't in production back when I built my truck. I mounted mine with brackets attached to the sides of the radiator support. If I were doing it again I would still use similar mounts, but would go for a dual fan setup just for the extra insurance. |

I went to pick a part this weekend and found a fan out of a ford taurus and picked it up should work perfect and at $20 cant go wrong now i need to build a mounting bracket and and wire the fan and I will be one step closer to being able to drive my truck I hope

im running a be-cool fan on an aftermarket aluminum rad. I think its either 14 or 16" cant remember. Aside from the cooling value, and saving some rotating mass, it frees up so much room to work.

I am going to use a dual fan setup from a 95-98 ford contour/ mercury mistique $ 105.00. it should pull the 4500 cfm range. A fan relay kit from oreilley's for about $40.00 and I am ready. It fits the radiator perfectly, with only about 1/2 inch open on the sides and about 2-1/2 inch open on the top/bottom.

I run a Pete Jackson gear drive and I've had manual fans that drowned out the gear drive. Some models of each type are louder than others, but I find the constant hum of an electric fan much less annoying that the rpm related pitch of a manual. |

Joemomma1, do you have a wiring diagram for that set up? I just found that Volvo relay at the junk yard today and grabbed it. Is the Audi thermo switch a dual temp switch? If so do you have a part # for it? Thanks.
