1960 Apache Restoration
I'm currently working on restoring a 1960 Apache short bed, step side. This is the first time I take on such a big job so I'm reaching out the experts for some advice. I recently upgraded the braking system to disc front brakes with a power master cyclinder. I kept the rear as shoes because I didn't want to change the entire rear. Nonetheless, the next things to work on are rebuild the engine (350-V8 from a '78 Malibu), convert the four speed manual transmission into an automatic 700R4, rewire everything (American Autowire Classic Update) and new exhaust system.
Obviously I cannot do all if it at the same time, what order do you recommend I do these upgrades? |

Re: 1960 Apache Restoration
Sounds like a good plan to me! If it were me, here is the order I would do them. Wiring, trans, engine and then exhaust. All so the motor isn't just sitting around while I do other projects.

Re: 1960 Apache Restoration
Sounds like a good truck. Looking forward to seeing progress on it. On my current truck, the 64, I decided I would do things, one safety first, then whatever will keep it off the road the least. I enjoy driving it too much to go crazy like I did on previous trucks. Even adding a rear sway bar has been delayed months, because every time I think about doing it, I drive it instead.

Encountering a similar problem with my 61. I currently can't get over about 55mph with my 3-speed and granny rear-end. I'll be watching your thread for pointers.

Re: 1960 Apache Restoration
Nice looking truck! If it is driveable I would do what verdell recommended. You could drive it while you rebuild the V8. Then do the rewire and exhaust last.
Shoot It took me forever to do my disc brake and rear end swap, because like Bill (Palf70Step) said I was having fun driving it. I have a T5 waiting to drop in but its been to wet and cold to work on it. Keep us posted
