62ish parts from 1960-2000
I have waited 15 years to get this truck. I have torn it down to the bare frame.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
This truck was built for a friend of mine in the 80s from pieces of trucks in a field.
It has a 60 from and cab. 62 front clip and a fleet side bed from something in this era. 1977 front suspension 1975 12 bolt rear end with 3.08 gears 1977 pontiac 400ci th400 combo Last edited by Eric15chevys; 12-20-2013 at 07:56 PM. Reason: picture |

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
Getting ready to tow my 62 home. I left the 400 pontiac with my step dad for his 55 pontiac chief. I have a newer engine for my truck.

My boys and I taking the truck apart. It is so nice to be able to use the same size wrench to take everything but the hood and door hinges off. I really enjoy my boys helping me.

.....and more slowly they go back on !!
Or so it seems! Hello and to the site! Great that your boys are engaged and interested in helping you with this, no doubt you are building memories with them that will endure, and perhaps imparting a sense of self reliance upon them. After all, not every problem with a vehicle needs an expensive trip to the Mechanic Shop. Hope you keep us in photos of your progress, we are kinda junkies like that

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
Hey Ta2Don! My dad lives in Searcy. This truck came from Conway, AR. I have been working on it for about a year and a half. I have stripped it down to the bare frame and sand blasted it. It have been por15 painted and I have finnally started getting it back together. I really just want a good driver. Not to low not to crazy just fun and reliable. I have a 5.3 and matching trans thats going into it.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
After the cab removal I have started cutting off all the things that should not be welded to the frame. Sometimes you have to improvise to get a better working angle.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
Interesting welds?? The engine mounts for the 400 were welded to the cross member. The bumper had about 7 pieces holding it on. The battery box weighs about 8 pounds and has 1/4 inch all thread as filler. Last but not least is there a goose neck hitch in the back of my coil spring half ton?

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
Does the later model steering box mount on your frame with existing holes in the frame or did you have to make new ones? And same question for the idler steering arm too? I've got a 61 I'm going to do this same swap to. Thank you

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
Wade you will have to redrill some for a late model box and idler. This truck had one, but the front frame was bent during an argument with a tree. Thats why I haven't painted it. I am installing a rack and pinion that mounts to the 73-87 crossmember(seemed like the simplest solution at the time). I will post pics of that this weekend. The holes for the steering were also drilled in the wrong place. This whole truck was a suspension mess. Here are a couple of links. The first is from the forum with decent pictures and the next is the CPP tech write-up

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
Nice to see some progress on the truck again Eric. I'll try and catch up with you in the next week or two. If you need any help or extra hands, give me a call.
Glad the a-arms finally arrived.

Thank you so much for the info and the links, I'll check them out and be waiting for the pics when you install your rack. You may be right, might be easier.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
Intalled both sets of front control arms then the bottom let go. So I removed the trans cover. The 55 year old seam sealer was still soft.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
Nice afternoon to hang the engine for the first time. I will have to modify the POL engine mounts to work with the 62 frame.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000
How bad are the mounts off Eric? Looks like they sit above the frame. Can you add a spacer underneath of them?
And digging the tires on the cherry picker....been thinking about the same myself!! This is another members truck...same frame and looks like same issue. How they resolved it...
