Re: Documented prototype of what evolved into the Chevrolet Blazer, SAY WHAT?
It's been on ebay a couple times in the past 4-5 years. I think at one point they had a buy it now at something like $100K

Yuk...
Took some imagination to go from that to what we know and love as 69-72 blazers/jimmy. |

Re: Documented prototype of what evolved into the Chevrolet Blazer, SAY WHAT?
I don`t think it`s quite a GM prototype.Vic Hickey designed and built it.He was an off-road pioneer in the fledgling years of recreational off-road enthusiasm. He was looking to market these as "Trailblazers".GM bought it up to snuff it,most likely. The Corvair had just come out, also.

Re: Documented prototype of what evolved into the Chevrolet Blazer, SAY WHAT?
The only resemblance to a Blazer is the name "TrailBlazer" that GM bought the rights to.Must have taking some imagination to link anything else to the Blazer.

Re: Documented prototype of what evolved into the Chevrolet Blazer, SAY WHAT?
I agree with these guys, that physically there's nothing in common.
In a sense, though, can it perhaps be considered a "prototype" in terms of providing the seed of the idea? I can imagine the GM engineers looking at it and saying "Okay, now how do we best take this and turn it into a product" and coming up with the Blazer. Brian |

Re: Documented prototype of what evolved into the Chevrolet Blazer, SAY WHAT?
I posted a thread abut this same "prototype" back in '03 and everybody agreed that it was something made to look like a blazer, but not a blazer, this is what the real prototype looked like:

SLIMJIM, I don't have any info in what kinda motor that 1st one had, but I seriously doubt it had a corvair one.

Re: Documented prototype of what evolved into the Chevrolet Blazer, SAY WHAT?
That first prototype(b&w)looks more like a Bronco than a Blazer:wheels, wheel openings, door opening,w/s,everything but the 1/2 top.Maybe GM bought the Blazer name from Ford after Ford realized the name Bronco would go well with it`s on-road counterpart Mustang. Then GM sold the name Trailblazer to Chrysler for their Plymouth utility vehicle.I wish someone would buy my name.lol

Re: Documented prototype of what evolved into the Chevrolet Blazer, SAY WHAT?
If you look close at the "68 blazer" it has decaling that matches the Hickey Blazers (the decals at the forward side of the hood, rollbar, etc.) I think it is a Hickey blazer that hasn't been fully Hickeyized yet. The flatbed truck even has the "OD" sticker on it that the Hickey Blazers have on them.
Thanks, Rg

Did anyone save the original article on the prototype Blaazer? Looks like it's long gone now.
