need to do a transmission service on my TH350 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

hey guys,

going to do a transmission service on the 71, it has a TH350 transmissoin. noticed the pan gasket leaking pretty good since i pulled it out of storage.. tightend it up for now. but i got a kit today with the filter and gasket. looks like i might need to take out the rear transmission crossmember out to do this this? am i right? or can i get a universal in there to undo those bolts? also what is the torque spec's on the pan? and how much fluid will it take about to fill it back up? i know there will be some fluid left in the converter after i drain it. but just dont know how much i will need to fill it back up.

please let me know.

I was able to get to it w/o removing the cross member. I think the swivel worked on the corner ones, but on the middle ones I had to do baby turns w/ a plain old open end wrench.

You will probably use 4-5 qts to refill, that's about half of what the trans/converter holds.

You can try a 1/4 inch drive ratchet/socket with a 6 to 8 inch extention and a swivle.
If you can't get to it, instead of removing the crossmember, unbolt the tranny mount and jack up the rear of the tranny a little.

Which bolts? The tranny mount bolts, sorta tight. The trans pan bolts, not very tight at all / somewhat snug when using a 1/4" rachet. If you overtighten, you'll end up w/ a leaky pan.

If you can help it, don't get a cork gasket. Napa has a nice reusable one in there filter kit. The cork ones squish out when you torque it down too much.
I normally use a 1/4 inch rachet and use 2 fingers on the handle when tightening it up. Never had one leak yet.

i have a gasket made by felpro and its not cork.

but is there not a torque spec for the pan bolts????

also longhorn, do you know how much flid i will need to re-add?

In my Haynes manual, there is no number given. It just says tighten a little at a time until the final torque number is reached. Just make them tight, but not enough to warp the pan.

it's been about a year and a half since I've filled a non overdrive tranny....I have no clue how much it'll take.
Buy 2 cases and return the 2nd case if you don't open it.

My haynes manual says the pan bolts are 10 foot lbs which sounds about right and you should tighten them like Jman said a little at a time all the way around until they all get to 10. be sure to put a little fluid in the torque converter before you install the tranny. Maybe a quart if it will hold that much.

i just finished, wish i had have had the torq spec. before i started..haha wasnt on there before i started. probably should have. oh well.. time will tell if its going to leak or not. i just did it to what i thought was good.. probably more then 10 foot lbs tho.

see what happens.

...my 68 manual says 8#s, but the lowest my torque wrench goes to is 10#s so I did 10#s. It varies from 8# to 13#s so I'm not so sure why???
