Rear Window Gasket Help Please - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

All, I went to put a sliding window in my cab, large window, no trim, followed the direction, used plenty of dawn dish soap and could not get the window to go in. I wound up tearing the gasket to shreds on the inside. Any suggestions. Process I used, put the gasket on the sliding window. Put a small cord in the inside track, held the window up and pulled the cord from the inside. Zip, Zilch, Nada, a royal pain and very frustrating. Before I call the glass shop, is there a better way.

You're doing it the right way. Did you have someone pushing on the back side of the glass? I found that the pressure helped "pop" the glass in. Also, try one side at a time. Once you get one corner in, you can slide the window into that corner, and that gives you a bit more room to work with on the other side. I'll be reinstalling mine in a few weeks. A buddy got a bit overzealous when installing mine, and the string tore my rubber too, but not enough to cause a leak. I'm just an an@l guy you wants his truck to look right.

Thanks for the assitance, I went an bought a new gasket, as I am the same way, I cant stand things that dont look right.

Use Goop or GoJo hand soap and not the dishwashing detergent. It clings better and doesn't run off.

u need an helpper outside pushing on the window i did the string trick expect i used weedeating line it seem to work great

Does an old gasket work, or is a new gasket required for pliability?

I would use a new gasket, I couldn't imagine using an old gasket with as much trouble as I had trying to get the gasket to fit on the inside of the cab.

What was tearing the gasket? It you kept pulling the string thru the gasket, go with a bigger string (small rope)...

I used weedeater line, .085, and it sucked. My thought was it ripped the gasket because it was too tough/ridgid. Going to try again, I called a local glass guy Safelite and they will not install 3rd party glass (sliders). They say it breaks too easy. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

use clothesline cord. can get it anywhere. its soft and not too big around.
