454 in 63 chevy?

I am going to be putting a 1980 454 in my 63 chevy k10. I heard somewhere that you need special motor mounts that will push the motor forward for the big block to fit. Is this true, or will i just be able to drop it right in there? If i do need something special, what are they called and where can i get them?

Re: 454 in a 63?

Are you converting from a I-6? Perches are different for some I-6 motors. I think the 292perches are identical to V8s. The other I6s have one perch that is moved over. Get the right perches and the 454 bolts right in.

Re: 454 in a 63?

It will bolt in with the original style motor mounts, but I'm not a fan of that style of mount as they're not very durable in a HP application.....IMO. If you are running taller than stock valve covers, there will likely be firewall interference with the engine in the original location. Will you be installing headers? What trans are you going to run? You will need the correct flywheel or flexplate for the trans you run since the 454 is externally balanced.

Re: 454 in 63 chevy?

3 ways to do it:

1. Use stock SB mounts...sits a little higher.

2. Use 67-72 BB mounts....trim frame rails.

3. Use 73-87 mounts and trim frame rails.

.....or use aftermarket pieces, these are stock options. The only clearance issue I've heard of is the tall valve cover against the firewall. I havent done this (yet) so I dont know particulars.

Re: 454 in 63 chevy?

I replied in your post in the 'Engine and Drivetrain' section. In that post you didn't mention that your '63 is a K10......that makes a bit of a difference. You can use the original style mounts as I previously mentioned. However if you were to change to a newer style motor mount (better design IMO), it will be a bit more involved than if it were a C10. On the K series the motor mount brackets are part of the engine crossmember. I have done some measuring in the past, and to install a newer style crossmember for the later style motor mounts will require some modification as the newer frames are taller than the older frames.

See my other post for the other issues.
