How Do I Transport a Long Bed Box? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am buying a pristine long bed (just the bed) and I would like some feedback before I mess it up during transport. I have searched and have found only one picture of a bed being transported. It looked like someone used cement blocks and 2x6's for blocking then strapped all 4 corners to a flatbed trailer. I have a 16' flatbed (should be enough) and I'm wondering if I could use jack stands (4) to make it level then strap it down to my trailer Or. should I turn it over and let it rest on the rails. Turning it upside down would be a bit of a hassle. I have seen others transport them standing on the front panel but it looks like it might act like a sail in the wind.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated !!!

I would put some cushion under the rails and turn it upside down, strap it to the trailer and head down the road.

+1, I've seen guys who lay 2x4s across the width of the truck bed and place the doner bed upside down

Geoff can attest to this... when I arrived to pick up my bed the guys at the bodyshop where it was stored looked at me funny and said... "Ummmm, you know that bed not's going to fit in that trailer, right?"

Being the smart ass that I am, I said "sure it will" then just smiled as I started laying out my pre cut 2x4's

I had planned on hauling it upside down the whole time. Zero issues and I didn't have to worry about a bed hanging over the bed of my nice truck and didin't have to run straps down the side of my bed which would probably scratch the **** out of it. The Silverado pulled the lightweight bed and trailer like they weren't back there. Just bring a couple friends!

Yeah, I agree flip it over, and lay it on some kind of padding, tie it down and head down the road.

I know said it would be hassle to turn it over, but still yet, that's only way I would transport one. My brother were able to take the LWB bed off the donor truck for my '67 C-30. It was little tough, but we are both big guys. I believe 3 guys could do it comfortably.

I bought a rust free box a while back...I used a snowmobile trailer,put it on and stacked doors and fenders inside...worked great...!!!..

If you are pulling the trailer with the long bed truck, I would unhook the trailer, leave it at home, turn the bed upside down and strap it to the top of the bed on the original tow vehicle. It would save fuel and the aggravation of having to pull an empty trailer all the way there. I don't know about you and your rig, but my trailer empty buckboards my truck worse than when it is loaded.

Good luck on bringing it home.

i have seen guys transport them by putting an old mattress and some other stuff to rais the bed up high enough not to mess anything up ans then using old blankets to cushion the ratchet straps holding the truck bed on so as not to mess up the paint

I just moved mine on a small trailer yesterday. I built two framework supports and put them under the bed. Wish I had taken some pictures. The supports are 12" high, 18" wide and 4' long. I set the bed on the 12" high side to transport and on the 18" high side to do the body work and paint. That way we don't have to take it off the trailer to work on it.

Lay the cross sills on blocks. Dont have to tip it over, and you dont bent the bedsides. Just remember to strap it down.

I couple strips of old inner tube layed on your present bed rails and a couple 2x4s .Turn it upside down and strap it down.The trailer is just a hasel as mentioned.I have hauled several this way without a problem.

I trailered one across half a province upside down.Worked great for me,had a tractor to load it and a skidsteer to offload though so that made it real easy to turn over.

i hauled mine on top of my other longbed. i cut small stakes for each pocket so they would stick up a few inches, sat the new bed on top of the stakes and tied it down. it never moved at all on the road home and some of the roads were pretty rough.

I have flipped it, and set on 4 wheels, but by far the easiest and I think safest is to grab 2 or 3 pallets and strap it down to your trailer...

Flipping a bed over makes more chance of dropping it in my opinion. A trailer is usually just a foot or two of the ground and therefore easier to load, you do not want to hear Uh-Oh from a hired hand do you? BRING PLENTY OF HELP , I think 4 guys minimum, I have done it with two, but it is not rel fun.

G.M thought that the best way to support one was by the cross members under the bed? I will have to side with G.M ..... But then again I don't really like the idea of straps bearing on metal that I will have to straighten ot later, JMO (and G.Ms)

Thanks for all the replies!! Since I have a short bed Silverado, I think that strapping it to my truck would be difficult....cool idea however.

67ChevyRedneck.... 2x4 cross members on a small trailer also very cool. My trailer is completely flat and tows well so padding and upside down sounds about the easiest.

Snowmobile trailer.....perfect!!! People in Missouri won't know what I'm talking about however

stllookn.... Cool!! With my luck the bed would be on the ground in 2 miles.

If you use the bed and your truck bed is the same style, you can put some short 1x2s in the front stake pockets and it will help secure it from sliding also.

I hauled mine 8 hrs from TX back to MS and never even flinched.

Again, thanks for all the input. When it came right down to it, I had to set it upright and just strap it down. This way I could fill the box with goodies. Worked very well and seemed very solid so no worries.

BWT, take a look at the crap I had to go through to get this thing!!! Snowing, blowing, icy roads, white outs and 2 wd. Man it was great!!

Only thing I would have done different is throw something under it (pallets or 6x6's ) Looks like a heck of a nice bed!! You do not find those in MO very often.

This is the last one I had, Sold it last fall.
