'69 C/20 Drum to Disc Conversion??

I have recently purchased a '69 LWB C/20 with coil spring suspension, 396, HD 4sp, and Dana 60 rear end. It has drums all around. I want to upgrade to disc brakes all around, or at least in the front.

I have not been able to find a kit for such a conversion. Does anyone have any thoughts on this project?

By the way, it has 8-lug wheels on it.

I think most guys just get the parts off a '72 from the junk yard, and install

Welcome to the board.

Look here for complete kits.
I just linked the front kit,... but they sell individual components also.

This is a good source for 8-lug rear disc brake kits.

Re: '69 C/20 Drum to Disc Conversion??

Thanks for the info! Would it make sense to switch to 6-lug so I can find better wheel options?

If you are going that far,... I would switch to 5-lug.
Most late model (1999-2012) 6-lug wheels (oem or aftermarket) aren't designed to fit these old trucks.
The center hub is too big for the small hole in the late model 6-lug wheels.

The 5-lug pattern is very common and there are tons of wheels available.
This will require you to do a rearend swap.
Is your truck a coil spring (rear) truck or leaf spring?

I'm looking at a set of 20s for my 69 6 lug C/10. They were on a 2005 Chevy. I better test fit them before acquiring. Thanks for the info!

Why not just change the axels instead of the entire, rear end?

A 71-72 5-lug rearend will work great for your truck.

Re: '69 C/20 Drum to Disc Conversion??

I would just swap the front and keep the 8 lug. There are plenty of 8 lug wheel options. You can get the parts from a 73-87 C20. It will move your front wheels out about 1" though. I did this on my 68 C20. Reply if you want all the specifics.

Re: '69 C/20 Drum to Disc Conversion??

You will need the booster, master cyl., and prop. valve off a 71-72 C20. Everything else can come off a 73-87. If you don't have power steering it's best to get everything. Tyrods, centerlink, idler and pitman arms, gearbox. For the suspension; lower control arms, springs, spindles, and of course the brake parts. The upper control arms are the same but you will need upper ball joints for 73-87. Chances are you'll have to have front brake hoses made. Or you can use the ones for drums if you get 76 and befor parts. In 77 GM went to metric threads on calipers, ps pump, and gear box.

Let me know if you need further info.

Re: '69 C/20 Drum to Disc Conversion??

i would definetely stick with 8 lug & get parts off 72. however new replacement parts may be slightly more difficult to get. depends on your taste & budget. aluminum wheels off of the 2000 & up silverados are very nice looking on these trucks.

I'm more than fine with the 8-lug. I really just want disc brakes (front only is fine). And I would love to know what wheels would look good on there. Haven't seen pictures of newer wheels on an 8-lug, but that would be awesome.
