Tranny swap

http://I have a 1971 c10 lwb. It has a 3on the tree in it now and a 350 engine(I pulled out blown 250 l6)... Going to switch out the 3 speed manual for 3 speed manual with overdrive out of a 55 chevy bel air I think... Just curious what all I have to do to make it work?... Shorten drive shaft? Move cross member? How to hook up the over drive?

i tried to install one of those muncie 319s in my truck i gave up theres not hardly any parts for them, thier weak, unsyncronized 1st gear, if you do decide to do it they use a 16 spline yolk you can find them on jegs you will have to mess with your 3 on the tree linkage because the arms are in a different spot or build a floor shifter

It should drop right in, the length is the same. The wiring, switches and cable all need to be installed, also. There's some info on the board- I just can't remember exactly where, a simple search should turn it up. I'm considering the same mod for my '70 C10, or a T5.

Thanks, 69chevy, I know that the parts are scarce for those units. I am wondering if the later units have the same yoke, and I know the 'boxes were all-synchro, after '62, IIRC. Probably end up with a T5, after all is said and done. More research is indicated! (it's winter, it's snowing and I'm bored)

i dont belive they went full syncro untill 65 or 66 you can tell by the side cover 4 bolt side cover is non syncro 1st 7 bolt side cover is full syncro and is usually a saginaw there are a few muncies i have seen you can also take a saginaw 3 speed overdrive and swap out the main shaft and overdrive unit to a saginaw 4 speed

Are u sure they are the same length? I would think this overdrive would be longer be ause of the extra gear box with overdrive gears!!?

They should be because the overdrive unit replaces the tail shaft and synchro means it will alow you to put it in gear while moving without any noise or double clutching
