What color to paint tranny and t case?

They are going in the shortbed 4x4 this week and need to paint them.I am open to suggestions..I was thinking about painting the np205 black and polishing up the covers for it.

Black sounds like a plan to me. I probably wouldn't do polished covers, but since yours is a show truck, you probably want them shiny.

Re: What color to paint tranny and t case?

I paint all tat stuff as original...Chevy orange. It looks sharp up under there. It just seems right.Black is about the only other color I`d use,if I wanted to be different. But,not yet.

EDIT:I wasn`t thinking too clearly when I first got up (I have pneumonia/sux).Now that I read a couple other posts I stand corrected.I should have said "as original or Chevy orange".

Black dissipates heat. That's why radiators are black and many engines are black.

Re: What color to paint tranny and t case?

I was told they originally weren't Chevy orange but were some sort of redish orange.
The t-case I just cleaned up and stuck under there because it still had paint on it and I use it.
That being said, I bought a new adapter. That is now Chevy orange. I just can't bear buying a new piece for $200 or whatever I paid for it then stick it in a bad environment without any corrosion protection (paint).

The SM465 in the 1969 c/20 I purchased new was painted a flat reddish brown. Don't know about transfer cases but I'm thinking they were black but I may be wrong.

^I like that^
BTW,heat disipation is not an issue at all with manual gear boxes. If you`re gettin`that much heat it`s time to tear into it.The motors are orange, the transmission and t-case are red. It`s worked all these years just fine.I like everything on the chassis black on my 4wds.I buy $90 Ranchos, scuff them up,spray bedliner on them, and put black boots on.

Re: What color to paint tranny and t case?

Well,I am still undecided on the color.I dont think Im going to put a chevy orange t case in behind a standard colored tranny(Im leaving the th350 that way) then the chevy orange motor in front of it.I am leaning towards black now.I will figure out what color to paint it 3 minutes before I do paint it

Re: What color to paint tranny and t case?

I used gloss black engine paint for the tranny (465), and GM red/orange engine paint for the tcase (205). My motor is all GM orange. For prepping I used a engine cleaner hooked to simple green and toothbrush. Switched to acetone for cleaning the cleaner juice out of the cracks and crevices.
