need some rear end help

I have a 1987 chevy R10 stepside shortbed 10 bolt in the truck now. I want to pull the rear and replace it with a 1976 C20 12 bolt.

My issues...
I need to know the size of the u joint for the 10 and 12 bolt in order to make the conversion. Using the same 87 drive shaft

Does anyone know the sizes off hand>? and maybe who makes a combo U joint?

Re: need some rear end help

I assume you know you'll have five lugs on the front, and eight lugs on the back, right? (unless you're doing something tricky with the axle shafts).

Re: need some rear end help

8 lug were on the 4x4. My 12 bolt is the same as the 10 bolt lug pattern.
But I am not at work scratching my head

Your info is a bit confusing. You state that the 1976 12 bolt is from a C20 which would be a 3/4ton. That would be an 8 lug axle, and I don't think it would be a 12 bolt.

Re: need some rear end help

Its a 12 bolt. I am sure of that. I just never looked at the hubs.
I am not going to use it since I just bought new 5 lug rims.

Thats a half ton rear end then, a little stronger than the ten bolt but not a whole lot. They should both have 1310 u joints.

I am using the 12bolt since it has the gears and the locker already in it. I installed it in the last truck I had .

Re: need some rear end help

Can anyone help me locate information on the 12 bolt rear? I do not have the old u joint anymore and NAPA can not cross these to the 10 bolt.

1976 1/2 ton 12bolt 5 lug
going in
1987 1/2 ton with 10 bolt 5 lug now.
