700R4 replacing 3 speed
Hey guys,
I am going to put a 700R4 in my 65. It currently has the 3 speed manual in it. Does anybody know off hand if it will fit under the floor ok since it doesn't have the granny tranny hump? I need to break out the tape measure and crawl around it, but it's only 4 degrees out today. Thanks.

Yea it will fit just fine, I have the 4l60e in my 65, which is the younger sister to the 700.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
my 66 had a 700r4 in it, after the 3 speed manual, but before the 4l80e haha
It will definitely fit, as the overall profile of the 700r4 isnt huge. If you haven't worked with the 700r4 before, just make sure you have the TV Bracket mounted onto your carb. Without it the trans will be useless, as the 700 relies on the TV cable for operation...without it it will melt down. I'd also suggest a good tranny cooler if you don't have one.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
You will have to bed the cab lip a bit, not much maybe a 1/4 inch. The 700 will hang up on it. I think you can see the lip I am talking about in this picture. I drove this truck for 4 years with a 700R4 in it.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
Aside from the TV cable hookup, don't forget this trans has an electronic hookup for the torque converter lockup. You will need to address both issues to get the full benefit of the OD trans.

Everything above is all good advice. The TV cable adjusts shift points and stiffness of shifts and the electronic part controls the torque convertor lockup. If it doesn't shift correctly or lock up (atomatically or manually), you will DESTROY that tranny. I know from experience. Very expensive lesson learned!! Now, i have a couple of these transmissions lying around for future projects. Get em cheap and rebuild them, then squirrel them away for other rides. I will never go with any other trans than a 700R4 in anything I build from now on. Sam |

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
Yes, Sam. I ended up putting a manual switch on the dash for torque converter lockup, but i leave it in the "on" position pretty much all the time. I had to play with the adjustment on the tv cable a little, but got it where it needed to be finally. Works like new. If i had it to do again though, i think i would just use the vacum operated switch to operate the converter, really doesen't to seem to be any reason to manually control it when the factory switch did a good job. I've driven the truck everywhere all summer long and no problems. Just put it away for the winter last week. The old gal is resting now till spring and then it will live again.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
For $120 you can change out the electronic converter and go with a mechanical that locls up at 1100 RPM. Also get the ceramic pack 3rd and 4th gear.-Much stronger.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
I agree, the 700r4 is not a hot rod trans, but I'm pretty easy on it. Got a real low rear from the old granny gears (its original and had the granny geaer with the 4speed) and it'll rip your face off from zero to 60, but also get a nice combination with the OD and it cruises nice.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
I couldn't leave my switch on. My tranny has a reprograming kit in it and locks up in 2nd gear with the switch on. Talk about lugging an engine.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
Must be a newer edition. I know there are some variations of the 700r4. There are different wiring patterns. Mine only locks in OD.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
Sam: Mine bogged to a crawl on the 2nd gear shift too, until i adjusted the TV cable and that extended the shift and took care of the problem. Had to adjust again and again, but finally got it just right.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
Not enough tension to hold off the lock-up, huh? Yeah, I got it sorted out. Now, mine will give you the PEZ-HEAD when it bangs second.

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
What about putting a 200R4 instead of the 700R4? Will the 200 fit better?

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
I have 1965 230 inline 6. Will the 700R4 bolt up to the 6cyl?
Thanks Ken |

Re: 700R4 replacing 3 speed
Yes the 700R4 will bolt up just fine. I believe the biggest issue you will have is fabricating a TV cable bracket for your carb setup, and getting it adjusted correctly. I know there are others here that have the 700R4 behind I6's, but it seems to me they are using other than stock intakes and carbs.
