Windshield trim question-repost
I'm posting this over here for Smitty62 - he posted it on the Paint and Body board but didn't get any replies

This would be my suggestion. If the windshield is good, have it taken out by a professional. The seal, trim and window should come out as a unit. Done carefully, the seal, trim and windshield will not be hurt. In my area the shop that I use charges $30 to remove the windshield with or without the chrome, (installation is $60). I would advise against doing it yourself. (Back glass is relatively easy to do yourself, but the windshield can be a problem).

Agree, you don't want to try to take the trim out without taking the windshield out. You will ruin it. The trim and the rubber must come out together. Have someone take the windshield our for you. May save the cost of the windshield unless you know what you are doing. (Just don't forget your goggles for the trip home!)

These guys are probably right but wanted to mention that I did manage to remove the chrome from a truck in the junk yard with the glass in. You must go very slow so you don't kink the trim. I was sweating it out! LOL

The other issue is rust. You must have some doubts about the condition of the metal under the seal. The only way to know, AND to fix it, is to remove the windshield and the seal, to access the area where I would be willing to bet that you'll find some rust...the amount not known.
In addition to the ravages of time, some people seem to think that using RTV as a sealer is a good thing. There are different kinds of RTV, but those which contain acetic acid will cause rust. If anyone ever used that type of sealant, you'll have that to contend with, too. As much trouble as it may seem to be, and if I read your post correctly, you are wanting to get rid of the rust around your windshield. So, in my opinion, you have two choices...remove it and do it properly, or, the other way.
