Cam gear belt?
I have a new to me 65 c10, 250 three on column with overdrive. Original 292 came in the bed of the truck. I just freed it up, pulling off the timing chain cover and saw this. Was there a belt?
Eventually I would like to get to 292 back to stock and in the truck.

Re: Cam gear belt?
that's not good. don't turn the engine over anymore . the cam shaft isn't following the crank anymore and the pistons might find an open valve to bend. I don't know where the rest of that gear went but this is a bad deal. the engine has probably seen better days.

Re: Cam gear belt?
Yeah, that's not a good sign. Never seen the whole gear missing like that.
Moving this to the Engine forum.

Re: Cam gear belt?
When I got it it was completely Frozen in the bed of the truck. That's why he put a running 2:50 in it, although it wasn't running well. I just replaced the distributor and it's running like a top but I would like to put the original engine in it. Going to have a machine shop look over the whole thing but I wasn't sure if there was a belt back in 65? Preciate you guys input. Definitely love these old in lines. Anyone have a picture what it should look like?

Re: Cam gear belt?
It's a plastic gear. It's not uncommon for them to separate or melt at the hub like that after so many years, miles, and abuse. The previous owner probably pulled off the cover, saw the loose gear, scratched his head, pulled the gear off the shaft, set it on his workbench as a souvenir (or maybe to find another one and revisit later) and put the cover back on sans the gear. There is no way the whole gear just disappeared. It was purposely removed. It's huge like in the picture of the long block posted above. There is no timing chain or belt on an inline 6. Chances are that gear stripped with the engine running which also means the entire top end needs a close look.
