Plan B (or C or D, I've lost count)

I was planning on starting my disc brake swap this weekend by swapping the xmember from a 75 to my 70. After getting a good look at it I realize that it would need to be totally rebuilt (every bushing or joint is shot). So now I'm leaning towards using just the spindles. I have a 72 that I am gonna use the steering off of (in pretty good shape). Here's the question...will the 75 outer tie rod fit in the 72 adjuster (since I can't use the 72 outer tie rods in the 75 spindles).

Or should I just use the steering and spindles off of the 72?

Gimme some input guys.

BTW the objective is the cheapest way to get disc brakes.

The 73 outer tie rod will not fit into the 67-72 adjuster sleve.

You can use the 73 up center link with 73 tie rods and spindles along with the 73 ball joints.

67-72 didn't all use the same sleeve.

71 and 72 use an ES2004S sleeve, and the part number for a 75 sleeve is the same.

Naah, that crap all needs replacing. Looks like it's the 72 spindles then. At least for now. Thanks for the info. I was leaning toward this anyways, now I still have a complete crossmember for whatever project I manage to sneak past my wife next (or maybe converting one of my 4x blazer frames to a 2wd? hmmm).

If you think you might rebuild this front end some time in the future,... use the '73-up stuff. The later model stuff is cheaper at the parts store. And like Jim PA said, the '71-'72 sleeve will accept the '73-up outer tie rod. The '67-70 won't. (but a conversion sleeve is available for this swap.) Another thing to think about is all he associated parts you will need. New rotors? calipers? brake hoses? I would do some price shopping before you decide.

It's not going to be cheap any way you do it, unless you just buy a 72 that has a really tight front suspension in it, and just bolt in the front end, and grab the other brake stuff off it that you'll need.

Any other way, and you are doing everything -- TRE's, ball joints, sleeves, master cylinder, rotors, calipers, spindles, prop valve.... you get the idea, and unfortunately it isn't cheap, but at least it'll be all new.

Jim are you 100 % sure on that ? I remember having issues getting the 73tie rod to fit the 71 sleeve.

krue , i installed a complete '85 xmember under my '69 ,simple bolt in , just two holes to drill. the rebuild kit is about a third the price . i also used the '85 power steering box.
