1960-66 4x4 trucks did not have hubcaps installed on them when new.they just had rims only without hubcaps.

Re: Hubcaps

Chevy did offer a 4x4 hubcap in 1963. Looks like the stock hubcap with a hole in the center. Don't see them very often, but they are around. There was 1 on ebay about a week ago. This is a pic of the rear cap for 3/4ton that had clips on the rims....have a pic of a 4x4 front with the hub hole...will try and find

Good evening. I know this is an older thread, but I was researching wheels, tires, and hubcaps for my 65 Suburban 4x4 I just bought, and came across the photo of your 4x4. It is amazing! I love the look and stance of your wheels and tires. Could you share the size wheels and tires and brand you are running?

Thank you!
Ken

Re: Hubcaps

All the factory literature I've seen, 4x4s had no hubcaps from the factory. Anyone can easily cut some holes & install them, though.

I have seen multiple 62-66 trucks with GM made 4x4 hubcaps in the last 20 yeasr. I do not dispute that it may not be found inliterature, but the ones I have seen were not modified. They were OEM parts. They may not have come stock, but could be ordered and do exist.

Not arguing either way, just saying I've never seen any in any of the stuff I got-brochures/manuals/parts books from 60-66, but have seen some on ePay w/holes. People tell me in-dash A/C wasn't available in '64 all the time, even though I own one w/it. Never seen anything on the rear trim either,
nor the GMC fact A/C or buckets-but I've seen one w/it.

Re: Hubcaps

Many get caught up in the '60-'66 trap and make generalized statements. Features are year specific in most cases and you just can't clump these years together with the same rules. 1960 and 1961 Chevy 4X4's did come with hubcaps as standard equipment. 1962 thru 1966 Chevy 4X4's did not come with hubcaps as standard equipment. However, if you wished to install them on a '62-'66 back in the day, just visit the Parts Department and order a set and start cutting holes. IMO, a set of caps just looks more complete.

And to correct myself...I did find info on the compass, clock and trim in the custom accessory manual for 63, they show install and parts #'s -sorry. Believe Aerotruck had some literature on these items also.

Re: Hubcaps

Can I just say that I have never been a fan of longbeds or long steppers, but your truck has changed my opinion. That truck looks rugged as hell and I love it!

Re: Hubcaps

1963 Chevrolet 4WD did not come with hubcaps from the factory. Since they were the same from 1961-63 in two wheel drive & 1962 4WD would have been the same, who says you couldn't order a set and put them on your truck! The GMC caps have that nice circle in them for machining out the center section for installing on the front diff.

READ THE LAST LINE ON THIS PAGE!

Parts book shows no listing for a 4WD cap after 1962! Interesting!

Re: Hubcaps

Does wheel size have any bearing on if the truck came with hubcaps? My 1961 GMC Suburban 4WD has 17.5" wheels. It was a pretty fancy and expensive truck when it was new. I can't imagine buying a truck this nice and expensive and not getting any hubcaps with it.

My Sub spent its life as a university geology department field vehicle driven by professors. I think they took some care of this truck and it contained details like owners manual and other literature in the glove box, along with hardware that fell off like sliding window latches. It wouldn't have surprised me that at least one hubcap remained if it originally had them. I don't think I've ever seen a photo of an early 60s GMC 4WD Suburban with 17.5 wheels with hubcaps.

Here is one. Gov. agencies typically ordered this optional wheel for higher ground clearance. These 6 lug 17.5" wheels are super hard to find today.

Re: Hubcaps

My 1962 K20 has 17" wheels, and all five rims have four tabs rivited to the wheels. The wheels are the same color as the truck. Are the 17" rims have the same size hubcaps as a 16" wheel?

Re: Hubcaps

Rim size has nothing to do with wondering if a hubcap will fit. The important thing is if your wheel has clips or not. If a 3/4 ton, only wheels with clips will attach orignal style hubcaps. 3/4 ton 8 lug clip rims require 8 3/4" opening hubcaps. If a 1/2 ton, wheels came with both clips and bumps. If you have bumps, you need the 10 1/4" opening hubcap. If your 1/2 ton has clips, you need the 7 5/8" opening hubcap.

Re: Hubcaps

Heres another question. I hear a lot of trucks have 17.5s and other have 17s. Did the wheel combo vary at build plants or customer choice?

Its easy to get confused with 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton wheel sizes.Unfortuantely, sales brochure just list standard and maximum sizes, not the inbetween sizes. The 17.5" 1 piece wheel was available in both 6 lug 1/2 ton and 8 lug 3/4 ton. The 17" 6 lug 1/2 ton wheel does not exist. The 17" 8 lug 3/4 ton wheel was made, but only in a 3 piece heavy duty design.

Re: Hubcaps

then it will be the 17.5" wheel. most 1/2t would have been ordered with either 6.70 or 7;10 x 15" and most 3/4t would have been 7;50 x 16"

Re: Hubcaps

I think that if you could look at the bare bones basic truck it will be listed with a 17 0r 17 1/2" wheel. everything from there on was an optional tire. they would have been the cheapest tire and wheel that could be put on to do a job. very seldom would they ever be ordered that way
you would have seen them more on governmental vehicles or as a lost leader to get customers into the dealership. the price on this chevy truck this month is $1295.00; std truck 250 cu in eng, 3pd, 17" tires,no heater,no radio, 1 sun visor and single colour. ford and ihc perhaps couldn't get under 1350.00. that farmer thought that was a pretty good price for a new truck and away he would go. new truck for the farm .
people hardly ever buy a basic truck any more.
