cracked frame
Been working on the frame off resto of my 4x4 and ran into a snag.
Question: Are the frames the same from 81 to 87 on both 2 wheel drives and 4 wheel? If so I am thinking of using a different one instead of trying to patch this one up. Was going to try to attach pictures but I think it is easier to do it this way. http://home.earthlink.net/~dimonis/id4.html Tim |

I believe that the 2X4 and 4X4 frames are pretty different up front since the 4X4's have a straight axle with leaf springs and the 4X2's have an independent type setup. I think that area around the rear shock mount is a pretty common area for the frame to crack. Another common area you might want to check is where the steering box attaches to the frame.

So the dimensions are the same between 2 and 4 wheel drive frames? How many holes do you have to drill to convert them?

Tim, the frames are the same in that every thing off you 4x4 will fit except your front suspension it is totaly different it has wholes in it for the rearward spring hangers.I soppose you could drill all the holes in it that you would need but there are so many of these trucks around you should be able to find another frame somewhere if your looking for a cheap way out I would repair that crack and weld anew piece on the inside it will last forever I had to do it on my old 82 short box 4x4 and I beat the hell out of it aftere an I never had any problems with it after.
