Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

So I know my truck is a one owner truck and that it was built in St. Louis Mo. The key ring has the original key punch outs on it and this tag.

Tag states
No. 54
Year 1971
Make GMC
Model ce25934
Color med bronze/w
Serial no. S119359
Code
Price

Form 22

Comfort-St. Louis,mo.

Re: Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

I would say the tag is from a used car lot. The key knockouts are hard to say. I replaced the iginition in my 69 and those keys had knock outs on them also.

Re: Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

I would say dealership.
It's nothing but a guess, but When the cars/trucks are being shipped on the back of a big rig, the keys are in the ignition... no need to ID them. When the dealer gets the vehicles, they need to secure and identify the keys. Plus, the "Comfort" St Louis is probably a dealer name.
However, there seems to be little to no age/patena on the tag, while the key is fairly well worn. I'd guess Too Much Stuff hit the nail on the head. Either a used car lot, or a previous owner with too much time on his hands or a lot of vehicles.

Re: Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

I'd think used car lot too, but I know for a fact that this is a one owner truck. I've also searched for a dealer ship in St Louis with comfort as the name or in the name and found nothing. The tags not as nice as it looks in the pics but it is laminated.

Re: Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

I would guess the "comfort" line more would be from a printing company and that was a generic key tag used for inventory. It never got replaced with a "custom" key fob as many folks like to do...

Re: Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

That's a good point about the comfort being the company that made the tag, not a dealer. Just thought it to be odd that the truck was built in St Louis and the tag has St Louis on it.

Re: Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

some info on Comfort printing:

full story here:
http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/s....html?page=all
Comfort Cos. was founded in 1900 by Clarence Comfort with a letterpress and flatbed press. Hartley Comfort Sr. bought the company in 1939 after his father died.
S.G. Adams was founded in St. Louis as an office supply business in 1875 by Samuel G. Adams. Adams became the first manufacturer of license plates for buggies and later, automobiles. When the license plate business took off, it was Adams who approached federal prisons and asked them to allow inmates to make plates for him, according the company's Web site.
Comfort Printing & Stationery purchased S.G. Adams in 1959. Comfort Printing was a local competitor that specialized in printing. "We left the Adams name because it was so well-known," Comfort said.
The company's problems started in the mid-1990s when it began closing its 13 stores and withdrew from the retail market to go after the commercial market. The company closed its last retail store, at 10th and Olive streets downtown, in 1994.

Another casualty of the internet and Big Box Retailers...
Tim
PS good luck on your search. Pretty rare to see the punch outs still there.Nice find!

I have also seen similar tags used at body and mechanics shops.

Re: Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

It's very similar to the ones they use today. Anyone can buy them in bulk. You write on them and fold the laminate back over it and it self adheres. We used to have yellow ones at a chevy dealer where i worked.

Ya I know they are very similar to the ones now because I am a car dealer myself, was just wondering if there was something done like this when they left the plant.

Re: Is this key tag from the dealer or from the assembly plant

I think "Comfort" was probably the company that made the tags. When I worked at the car lot you used to get the odd person ask you for some of those tags so they could tag their spare keys at home and I think if your truck is original that is how you ended up with the key tag.
