What is the best THeft Deturent?
What is between your truck and some scum bag making it disapear.
Ya so you have Comp or full coverage on your pickup that wont replace all hard work or sentilmental value your truck means to you. No I am not talking about your Smith & Wesson or a pitbull / german shepard in your truck. I was thinking more along the lines of a club lock for the steering wheel, removable steering wheel, ignition kill switch for you dizzy or starter. Maybe a hood latch lock, low jack car retrival systerm... ect. I was considering a low jack type GPS but you have a monthly bill just like your cell phone. Some things just aren't replaceable.decal protected by Some feed back here please. Thanks |

put a blue oval over your bowtie and it should be safe lol..but anyways my fathers getting his truck restored right now and i think they are installing a hidden kill switch somewhere inside the truck...I have looked at lowjack, and i dont know what the monthly payment is but from their commercials and their guarantee it looks good

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
i put a kill switch just above the e-brake handle and under the dash. i made an "L" shape bracket out of sheet metal and used a typical toggle switch.
i extended the "hot" wire from the dizzy to the toggle and then went from the toggle to the dizzy. i aloso have a viper alarm. i figure thats enough, because if someone is serious about taking your truck nothing is going to stop them. but at least i can make it a pain in the a$$ to take. |

Battery cutoff with removable key and a kill switch under the dash place it on the passanger side so they won't find it should heep it from driving off on its own. Unfortunately these trucks are too easy to get into to prevent 100% of theft the insides are pretty much fair game if left out in dark places or you have some enemys

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
I think most criminals look for an easy take. If you can keep it in a garage at night and keep it locked with a hidden dizzy/starter/fuel pump(pick one) switch you will be safe for the most part. But, if someone wants something bad enough they will find a way. They could always flatbed it off. My fear is that they destroy a bunch of stuff getting in and then when it doesn't start they tear out the stereo and whatever else. Some people are just jackasses.

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
I solved the problem by moving out of the Twin Cities. My dad who still lives in the Twin Cities does the following.
You need a toggle switch, a flasher, an automotive relay and some wire. Wire the circuit so when the toggle is on, and the dome light comes on, the horn flashes. Hide the toggle somewhere where people don't expect to find it and simply arm it when you are away from the truck. On my dad's Ford van, the sliding door did NOT turn on the dome light. So he simply put he toggle inside the van and always left and entered through that door. Further he left the wing vent unlatched so when the thief tried to get in he or she didn't break anything. The crack head finds the unlatched vent, pops it open, reaches in and rolls down the window, unlocks the front door, opens the door HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK...

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
There is no monthly fee for lojack,it a one time deal.I would use it in conjunction with a kill switch or club.Check your area to see if your local cops have lojack support,it doesnt work in some areas last I heard

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
well, thats funny, you listed almost all that exhist, why not pick one of them, or heck, all of em, I guess it would depend on how bad you DONT want it stolen, you might opted for several of them, I Used to use the club, but than went with the NO Wheel , No steal method, Grant makes it and its around $120 on the cheap side, I have seen it for much more in other places, real easy to install and uses a key to lock on and off the wheel, when wheel is off, you lock on a cap, one draw back is that its a five bolt pattern and are limited to certain wheels, Grant being one of them, cant remember the others that will adapt......

I have a fuel shut off switch that, if it's off you won't make it out of the neighborhood.

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
12 guage and a big dog.
my dog looks like a beast, and I doubt that anyone is going to take treh time to coem into my property ad risk him to steal my truck, not to mentin that it starting up would wake me up, and then the scumbag would wish that he had just let the dog have him.

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
I would say by far the most effective would be engine and wheel removal, but it's not practical.

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
I have a crime guard system with battery backup so they cant get to the alarm without setting it off. Also have a remote fuel shutoff so if they do get it started they will only go as far as the gas in the carb will take them. Also have a stated value insurance of $45,000 so maybe I should help them. LOL

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
I`ll tell you the best visual deterrant is to have a big red truck club showing from the windshield. most thieves dont carry a hacksaw to cut the wheel. so they see the club and just drive on. A big thing around here is that trucks are stolen so they can do smash and grabs or break into houses and load the back. (holds alot more than a car) so theyre looking for an easy truck to steal.

Re: What is the best THeft Deturent?
Well, given your hesitation on some of the other options offered - based on whatnow said, might I suggest an Indy Car style jack system, a portable impact wrench, and you just take your wheels off every time you park and set it on blocks? That rules out your vehicle moving.
Then you just have to have a place to stash the wheels. On a serious note - "The Club" is crap. I had one at one time. I forgot my key one night at work, and didn't want to wait for some one to bring it to me, so I started trying to figure a way to get it off the wheel. Low and behold, I did. There is a little black cap on the top of the lock here: Popped it off with my pocket knife, and there was a compression spring on top of a ball that pressed onto the shaft of the club to lock it into place. With that out, it slid freely. I was a 16 year old kid with no criminal record - I think a mastermind could figure that one out pretty easy. DLB Last edited by Orange; 05-07-2008 at 11:25 PM. |

The club is a great design....unfortunately it is used on a steering wheel, which takes about 10 secs and a hacksaw blade to cut through. It is nothing more than a deterrent, like everything else.
