Getrag NV3500
NV4500 i would rather have the NV4500, because it has a low first gear. i think its stronger to but im not sure.. and somethign about "getrag" sounds to much like "get a rag" to me

Two different manufacturers depending on year. New Venture and Getrag. Both are good manf. Getrag is German and has made trans for BMW, Porsche and Mercedes. New Venture is US. The 3550 is the light duty trans and the 4500 the 3/4-1 ton trans. Check out advance adapters for more info on trans or the JTR (Jags that run) TPI/TBI swapping manual that shows pictures of the full size trans vs. the S10 trans.

I've had both types behind 350s in '89 and '92 pickups. I think the lighter one AI had was a Getrag. It is considered a medium duty tranny and it's lighter weight has an aluminum case with a bell housing molded onto it. It's what you'd call a close-ratio five speed because 1st gear is in the 3:1-ish range, making a gear used in everyday driving. Pretty good tranny for daily driving but probably not built for a racer.
I put an NV4500 in my '92 K1500 and it's a pretty good tranny. It's less practical if all you're doing it on-road driving, especially in town. It's first gear is a "granny" in the 5 or 6:1 range, depending on what year it was made. So for everyday on-road use it's just a 4-speed, or a 3-speed with OD if you will. It's a heavy sucker with an iron case and a detachable bell housing. You looking to convert your 67-72? Or just shopping for a replacement? Good luck.

I am going to be putting it into my 68 as soon as I can find one a little cheaper than the yards around here are wanting for them....for the prices they want I might as well get one from the local chevy house.....

I have a getrag 5 speed in my truck 67. I like it a lot! very smooth shifting, no slop at all in the shifter Short throw too. gear ratios are just right. I have a 373 rear end and about 28" tires. In 5th 2100 rpm is about 60mph. The only problem is the electronic speedo hookup, need an elec speedo. I'm using my tach for now!
Worth it though I think. Jesse

dieharder, no, they're much smoother shifting. Hard to compare to a car, though because it's pretty numb (not sports-car crisp) and the shifter has a looong throw, like the old 4-speeds. But not at all the same feel as the old manny trannies.
