Liftgate VS Barndoors

I am seriously considering buying a '72 'burb with a liftgate. I hate liftgates. Do the barndoors bolt on, or would custom fabrication be required to swap?

I have never done the swap but from what I've heard it is easier to put barn doors on a liftgate burb than to put a liftgate on a barn doors burb.

I can't help you w/ this body style, but it was pretty much a bolt on swap to put barn doors on my '74.

Nobody knows? We have 4734 members, and an unknown quantity of lurkers and not one of them have tried to put barn-doors on a liftgate burb? Wow! That's amazing.

C'mon. I know someone has either done it or looked into doing it. Speak up!

i have put barn doors on a 66 suburban that had a lift gate... on the 66 on the door pillars there were plastic caps over to holes for the hinges for the barn doors..you can't convert to a lift gate on a 60-66 burb that was origionally came with barn doors because there is no holes in the lower panel to put the lower lift gate...not sure if this is the case w/67-72.....thought i'd post maybe it would help.......

I have a '67 k/10 Subn Carryall [6-16]. It has a liftgate but I know there are plastic caps over threaded reciever hinge points for ambulance doors to hang from.
The only obstacle to my making this modification before has been finding a good pair of back doors.

I havent done it yet, getting ready to, Im told by someone who just did it, that its a straight swap, no fabrication. "Big Orange" I belive is doing it too.......

Thanks guys (and gal), It helps. The 'burb is nice and the only thing I don't like about it is the liftgate. Good to know that swapping to barn doors won't be a major headache.

Easy swap once you get all the bolts out.and the lower pan running across the bottom is recessed for the tailgate hinges.but its just a bolt on,make sure you have all the latches and pieces.I sold my barn doors i had,because i like the tailgate more its been good as a chair at swapmeets,hatch kinda keeps you out of the rain,or throw a blanket on it for shade,and hauling long items makes it nice.I actually hauled a 67 SB frame is a burb.was some manuevering but it fit.or sometimes cruise with the hatch open,if you dont mind exhaust fumes.

I echo DR reply its a direct swap,make sure you have all the latches for the center of the barn doors,and please cap off the holes you dont use.lol My burb has always had the liftgate know as clamshell,I found this term in my studys of the burbs and panel in GM literature.Most panel came with barn doors because they were the workhorse of the two and the burb was more of a personel carryer but the customer could order which ever. These vehicles are very utilitarian but look great in the moderen eye as we like to see them.Trucks are great but the burbs and panel,blazer are different forsay.

I got a good look at the one I'm thinking of buying, and there are little round plastic covers over the bolt holes for the barn doors. The latch area on the bottom looked like it was set up to take the barn doors too. Looks like a barn-door swap would be a matter of getting all the parts from the donor 'burb and maybe just a touch of drilling where the latches go.
