update on how my custom bed is turning out
heres a few pics of how my custom bed is turning out,..im usung beetle kill pine and some strips I was able to salvage from work,..had to rabbet the edges of the wood to get them to fit the strips like I wanted,..still need to pull it all apart and do a final sand then apply 5 coats of waterborne poly
looks pretty good with the tool box in there

Re: update on how my custom bed is turning out
Looks great! Looking forward to updates as I'm about to do the same. I hear you about the kits, sometimes it's worth it to save time and buy the part/kit, sometimes it's worth the extra work to save some $ and make it yourself.

Re: update on how my custom bed is turning out
Yup...from colarado...the beetles kill the tree and it leaves a nice blue behind..they harvest the tree before its no good...the blueing has no affect on the wood other than color...its still a softwood...but i dont care...my truck will not haul anything heavy...more for looks and style

That looks awesome. I'm a rustic enthusiast so that's right up my alley. I even knew what wood you were talking about.

Re: update on how my custom bed is turning out
May be a stupid question.....I haven't seen a bed like this so high up from the frame.....maybe its for picture taking reasons. Why is it set so high up?

Re: update on how my custom bed is turning out
The truck is built to lay frame with a big notch in the back to allow the rear end to go up much higher than normal. Raising the bed floor is needed to cover the frame work.

Re: update on how my custom bed is turning out
thanks...its not din rail...its extruded aluminum used in older uhual trailers that is attached to the walls holding rubber for rub rails...i pland to countersink the bolts then run a small strip of wood in the middle hiding the bolts and giving the look of double rails...ill pollish them up to a shine

Alum extrusions are available in many shapes and sizes. many of them are used for rub rails and trim moulding that hides the mounting of a deck to the hull on a boat. These mouldings hold a rubber strip in them. like this: The "DIN" shape is what this extrusion actually looks very similar to but many DIN rails are pre drilled or have holes. It possible to find it with no holes. like this: More trims here: http://eagle-aluminum.com/product-ca...rail-aluminum/

Would love to make mine that way, thanks for the ideas. Where did you locate the beetle wood? What was that rail "intended" for...is it actual DIN rail for mounting CBs? |

Re: update on how my custom bed is turning out
that's looking great, totally stealing the idea for black accents on the rails
