Bought a rough running '04 Suburban
-
I bought a 2004 Suburban with the 8.1 496ci engine and 4l80e, for parts. I decided to see if I could figure out the problem with it. Scanner said code PO 306 cylinder 6 misfire. Do you think maybe this would cause the problem???? 285,000 miles on it.. Should I fix it? .

Yep. I love the 8.1. Torque for miles. They are one of the best truck engines GM ever built.

Re: Bought a rough running '04 Suburban
Oh wow, never seen a push rod go through the rocker arm.
Wonder if it got low on oil at some point. I bet that was a dead cylinder.

Re: Bought a rough running '04 Suburban
early version of GM's AFM, cylinder deactivation the hard way.
we are getting ready to replace a 5.3 in a late model GMC with AFM that deactivated #7 permanently. ordered a Jasper engine that eliminates the AFM garbage AND is legal in the peoples republic of commifornia. throw a new rocker on yours and drive the wheels off it.

Might not be a bad idea to replace all of 'em while you're in there...

Re: Bought a rough running '04 Suburban
As a mechanic with 35 years experience, I've seen that many times.. I've seen pushrods with the tip broken off, split rockers, pushrods that wear a hole in the rocker, broken rocker arm studs,, I even saw a pushrod go through the valve cover when the rocker arm failed, all sorts of weird things...

Thanks guys. I have an extra rocker and push rod I will put in it and see if there are any other problems before I change all of them. I am also going to insert my inspection camera down the push rod hole and see if I can see the lifter to make sure there aren't any problems with it. I am headed out to do that now. .

Re: Bought a rough running '04 Suburban
This is from the 350 in my K20 a few years ago. It was an exhaust valve so it was backfiring thru the carb pretty bad and obviously had a nasty lifter tap. Slapped another used rocker in it with the pushrod from the picture and it’s been good ever since.

I hope I will be able to say the same.... I think I need to check the valve spring a little closer on that valve while I am in there too. .

Re: Bought a rough running '04 Suburban
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that scenario before but, I’m surprised that kind of thing doesn’t happen more often. There are a lot of moving parts under tension and extreme heat in an internal combustion engine.
I guess I’m stuck thinking about the old harleys that you had to tighten almost every nut at 400 miles intervals. Leon, I’m confident that if that engine is salvageable your the man for the job.

Re: Bought a rough running '04 Suburban
The consensus now-a-days is that either JB Weld or spray foam will fix anything so...............
but with that many miles on it I'd personally freshen up both the eng and trans |

Re: Bought a rough running '04 Suburban
Here's what I see working with the Tool and Die industry for a while.
The Stamping Die that was producing these was, Either worn to the condition the punches and Dies needed replacing. Or the oil flow and air blow to clear the shavings and Scrap was not in Operation, In the picture I put arrows of things that should have been caught in the stamping process. With that being said it almost hit 300K.

You guys crack me up.... I'm going to give it my best shot Scott. The center of the lifter is also missing in action I was able to get the lifter out without removing the intake. I will post a picture of it in the morning. .

Got the old broken lifter out OK. Used my flex magnet to fish out the other pieces Looking down in the hole the cam looks OK. I am going back out shortly here, and check it with my inspection camera. .

The pushrod beat up the snap ring. I am thinking where are the Ears of that snap ring? It probably won't make it back through they will drop to the bottom. Is the oil pan Metal? If so a magnet could be place in a position away from the oil pickup.
