wierd starter noise
i've noticed that my starter makes a hell of a lot of noise compaired to all the other old cars and trucks. theirs are quiet while mine makes a loud NENENENENE noise (trying my best to put it in words). i did have to replace my ring gear a couple months back so im hoping its not that. im thinkin its the cheap rebuilt napa one that the po installed. am i right?

Re: wierd starter noise
Sounds like the starter might need to be shimmed.

Re: wierd starter noise
Is it actually starting the truck while making the noise, or do you hit the key a few times while it makes the noise & then it engages? It could be a million things... All easily fixable but not necessarily easy to diagnose...

Re: wierd starter noise
it does crank the engine when it makes the noise, and it makes the noise everytime

Re: wierd starter noise
could be that it needs shimming as mentioned above, or also the nose bushing might need replacement, or both.

Re: wierd starter noise
Not quite sure how to put this, but is your starter gear compatible with ring gear? Wrong pitch and it will eat ring gears. Had a heck-of-a-time figuring this out onetime.

Re: wierd starter noise
Sometimes Ive had to take a big rough file & file down the mounting surface of the drive end housing where it contacts the engine. The metal gets pulled up & spaces the teeth back too far. The shims just make it worse. Sometimes the aftermarket drive end housings that come with a reman. starter dont fit good.
