71 C30 Tow Rig
I have been hunting around for a C30 for about a year now to build a tow rig. Saw this one on CL last weekend about 3 hours from home. Picked it up early this week.
Originally a 307 truck. Not sure on the engine yet, have to check into it. PO says its not original, but he was not the original owner. Runs good. TH400 trans, PS, PB. |

Nice. Need more pictures.Let's see that grille guard. So,it has no "P" on the shift indicator, right? What do you plan to tow? I was expecting to see a tow truck

Re: 71 C30 Tow Rig
I plan to use it to tow my gooseneck trailers moving skid steers, Kubota tractors, antique tractors, etc. I do excavation work and have a couple of D**** Cummins trucks that we use in our day to day work. I have owned my 71 C10 for 20 years and decided I would like to build a 1 ton to enjoy and still be capable of being a workhorse. I dont plan to use it every day just now an then, and when going to tractor shows.
The transmission is set up exactly like any 10 or 20 series truck and does have "P" on the shift indicator. I have seen some that do not, but I believe those are the C30's with the larger wheels and high GVW rating of like 14 or 15K (I think). I would guess those heavier 30's would also have he parking brake drum on the drive shaft like a medium duty truck also? This one is rated 10k. I am not sure if the TH400 trans was factory on this 1 ton although that would make sense From what I can tell in the books I have here all were factory TH350. The SPID just says Turbo Hydra Matic. I still need to check which ratio it actually is but I suspect it is at least 4.56 or even higher. It's humming real good already at 50mph. Because of that I have has thoughts of an overdrive trans to gain some economy on the highway but I dont think a 700r4 would be nearly as tough as this 400. I'll snap few more pictures. The ones I have saved on my computer are not resizing for some reason. |

Re: 71 C30 Tow Rig
Nice truck. I have been looking for one as well to pull the trailer for my 47-2007 GM truck parts business.

Re: 71 C30 Tow Rig
Can someone tell me what the codes are for the rear axle on these c30's? Trying to figure out what the ratio is. I'm thinking 5.14 cause she screams at 55.
