Megatronix Hood Lock install for Task Force trucks

Hi. I just bought one of these Megatronix HL6 mechanical hood lock cable security systems with ignition interrupt. I'm going to install it in my '59 3100 Task Force. Has anyone installed one of these in their 55-59 Task Force trucks? I have seen some picks of these installed on later Chevy's, but those have a different style hood assembly. Any picks or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time

Good insurance works for me. In the old days when I lived in sketchy neighborhoods old school padlock and heavy chain was the deterent. Big noisy dog helps too. I never had much luck with aftermarket electronic alarms, to many false alarms. Leaving a couple of .45 or 9mm cartridges in plain site on the console or dash seems to help too.

I wrote the company because i have a 1956 chevy 3100. Here is their reply.

We'd recommend the HL7 (7 footer) for your vehicle as the hood is quite long on these older GM trucks. Below is the link to the installation manual:

Hi. Thanks for the replay and info. I got my Megatronix unit in the mail today. Before ordering, I measured out the length along the left side of the engine compartment to the hood release; it came out to just under 6' ( 5' 5" ). I ordered the 6' foot one. I took the Megatronix unit out to the truck tonight and did the best I could to mock it up. I'm glad I bought the 6' one, the 7' would have been WAY too long. I'm going to do a step by step thread on this install. I am also going to somehow incorporate this unit to lock the hood release and NOT hang a bracket from the hood itself ( to me that would look too tacky ). I hope to start this weekend.

Great I want to do one also and a nice install step by step thread would be cool. Take lots of pics and I would be interested in to see how hidden and how it looks.

Good luck

Re: Megatronix Hood Lock install for Task Force trucks

So it's been some time since this post and I have finally finished the mock up of this install. I did not want to have the locking mechanism on top of the Hood Latch Panel for everyone to see, rather I wanted it somewhat hidden.

I did have to shorten both the mounting bracket and sliding post responsible locking the hood latch. As you can see I mounted the locking assembly underneath and coming from the back of the Hood Latch Panel.

I then drilled completely through the entire Hood Latch Assembly to make sure the sliding post went through not only the Hood Latch but the main body of the Hood Latch Assembly itself.

Since I came up from behind the Hood Latch Panel, there was too extreme of an angle run the cable in front of the radiator ( it kept binding ), so I had to run it up over the radiator a bit. Not my first choice, but it still beats mounting the whole locking assembly on top of the Hood Latch Panel.

I then ran the cable along the Drivers side inner fender and then through the firewall.

The main body of the Megatronix Locking Mech was then attached to the underside of my steering wheel. I would like to come up with something better than the screw clamps, but for now they work just fine.

To lock, you push in the key, then turn the key and it is locked?

Is the tumbler spring-loaded, so it pops out to release the hood, when you unlock the key?

Thanks!

Re: Megatronix Hood Lock install for Task Force trucks

Hello Highsider. Yes, the tumbler is spring loaded. The only way to remove the key is to turn it to the lock position, then you push in the tumbler to lock everything. When you want to unlock the hood, insert the key turn to the unlock position and the tumbler releases out ( the key stays locked in the tumbler ). This Megatronix unit also has a starter kill feature you can wire into your ignition system, when it is in the locked position, the starter kill is engaged and vehicle can't be started.

Re: Megatronix Hood Lock install for Task Force trucks

Seems like too damn much hassle to me. Not to mention probably more expensive than THIS simple hood lock solution I saw at a show a few years ago. These are ordinary desk locks you can buy at Home Cheapo:

I think when I get around to doing this I will use an RV or barrel style lock like this. Just a bit more of a hassle for a thief and maybe it'll make them move on to the next car. In my opinion, any of these are only deterrents. If a thief wants what you have bad enough they'll keep at it til they've got it....unless you make it a pain in the butt for them.

Re: Megatronix Hood Lock install for Task Force trucks

That IS a good idea Dan In Pasadena, thanks for sharing. You are correct, if the thieves REALLY want your vehicle, they will eventually get it. My Megatronix unit is only one of many deterrence on my truck. The thieves will have to work pretty hard to get my ride, and the longer it takes to a thief the more likely they'll give up. Thanks for sharing

Re: Megatronix Hood Lock install for Task Force trucks

I don't think I could bring myself to drill a hole in my hood or fender, to install a lock.
I like apacheguy's cable with ignition lockout, too.

Or just drive a panel...nobody steals them!

Re: Megatronix Hood Lock install for Task Force trucks

I could and will do it but I think you have to do it before all the primer and paint work to make sure the hole in the hood and body work is well sealed. I'd also put a small polished stainless plate where the tab goes into the bodywork to avoid future scrapes and scratches.
