Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
I recently had a CPP 3"/4" Spring/Shock install done on my 72 GMC.
I STILL want it lower in the back. It was suggested to me by CPP to do a 2" Block Drop in the Rear and I'm definitely interested in that. My problem is that I'm not quite sure that a 2" Drop Block will give me the stance I'm looking for. I'm thinking more like a 3" Drop Block (at least). I know there are MANY more knowledgeable people regarding these, on this Forum. I also know there are other ways to do this, but I don't want this Thread to disintegrate. So I'm looking for replies that are geared towards the Lowering Blocks. I also know there are "DIY" people on this list and let it be known that I am NOT one of them. So after all that Pre-Qualifying, my question is: Does anyone make a Solid Drop Block that is MORE than 2"? Roger

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
I believe its Coil.
In looking under there I see the new Springs/Shocks and (what I call) Trailing arms. I see no Traditional looking "Leaf Springs". Roger|

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
I knew I could get Kevin out of the "Woodwork" to help me on this one!
Like I said, 2" Drop Bar may get me "Close" to the stance I want. I ALSO have to remember that I have 15" Wheels/Tires and I will eventually be going to 20's in the Rear and 18" in the Front. Again, heres my Truck with the NEW Springs/Shocks and the Green Truck is the Stance I'm trying to achieve. So what is a "Scrub Line" and why is it bad? Roger

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Assuming it is a coil rear, any drop block over 2 inches is going to get below the scrub line. Very bad idea.

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
The scrub line is an imaginary line under your truck at the bottom edge of the wheels. The idea is, if you get a flat tire and the truck sinks to the ground, you don't want anything hanging below the scrub line, as it would dig into the road.
Safety nazi stuff aside, I find that anytime I have something hanging below the scrub line, I always wind up digging it into the ground during normal driving. Any time you drop a wheel off the edge of the road, as entering a parking lot, if there is any kind of a ledge, grind.....

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
to get the look of the green truck, you'll need to "c notch" the frame. you can probably get away with 2 inch blocks with your set up. You will probably slam the axle into the frame when carrying a medium load, but probably not when empty though.

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Thanks Longhorn.
To be honest, the Wifes 05 GMC Sierra will do all Medium-Heavy Loads. My GMC will be hauling chairs and an Ice Chest to the Car Shows I enter it in. No workhorse here! About the only thing thaty'll be in the Bed will be a Layer of Rhino Liner. Seriously, as long as I can get "close" to that stance, I'll be happy. Remember that my settlement will be in late this year (or early next Spring). Then we'll "Finalize" things! Roger

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Well I urdered and received the 2" Lowering Blocks from CPP last week.
Took my Truck to the shop, and they installed them but the shipped the wrong U-Bolts,with the Blocks (not long enough). So there shipping the correct length ones this week. Also ordered some Pancake Bump Stops, but found out that those should only be used with a "C-Notch". They recomended cutting the OEM Bump Stops off half way, (which the previous owner already did). My Mechanic says that the stance is "just about" where the, Green C-10 is (in my 1st post). He says the ride is slightly stiffer in back, but NOWHERE as stiff as it was with the Torched Springs, that were on there BEFORE we put in the Lowering Springs/Shocks. I'm excited to see how it looks!!! Roger "RATIKLE"

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Well I went to my Mechanics today to take a couple of pictures after the 2" Lowering Block Install.
Although its difficult to tell from theses angles, I'll take pictures again, (from the same angle) when I get it home. Why didn't I bring it home with me.you ask. CPP sent the wrong (too short) U-Bolts, so I'm waiting for the correct ones to arrive. Roger "RATIKLE"

Thamks.
The Wife like it better with the "Rake" in back, but I didn't like rgw 3" of space above the Rear Tire to the top of the Fenderwell. Roger "RATIKLE"

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
How the heck did CPP screw that up?The fact that they were selling you blocks requires longer u-bolts.That would be the "only" reason you`d need longer u-bolts .Someone must be smokin`the good stuff(rather, crappy I`m tryin`to think stuff)

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Special-K,
This thread (where it pertains to CPP) is seeing some uglines at this time. As events unfold (Good or Bad), I will post my experiences here. It started out on a very good note, then someone else (other than the gentleman I'd been working with) got involved and it took a nose dive. My guy had been on Vacation and when he got back, he'd seen what had transpired and made a small effort to right the wrong, but then this U-Bolt problem came up and lets just say we'll leave it there for now. I'll report back in a week or so. Going out of State with the Wife on a 20th Anniversary Vacation! Roger "RATIKLE"

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Well its getting uglier now.
CPP re-sent the correct U-Bolts, but they didn't ship out for 4 days. They arrived while I was out of town for a week. So my Trucks been at the Shop now for over 2 weeks. Since I'm on a Tight Budget and CPP sent the WRONG U-Bolts, I have asked THEM to pay 1/2 the Labor Charge that my Mechanic is going to charge ME for putting in the wrong U-Bolts. My thinking is, the Mechanic shouldn't have to eat the Labor Charge for installing the wrong U-Bolts. I shouldn't have to pay either, as it wasn't any of my doing. CPP pulled the WRONG PART, and (in my opinion) if they want my repeat business, then they need to make good on their mistake! So far my "Go To Guy" there is saying No. I've asked it to be elevated to the Owners of the Company. I also have a Settlement coming in October and there's approx. $5K in Suspension upgrades ear-marked for my Truck. I told him if they don't make good on this Mistake, they will get no further business from me. Right now the balls in their Court. Roger "RATIKLE"

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Like many board members have found out,... CPP has great products, and poor customer service.
But I doubt that you would get anyone to pay "1/2 the labor" on installing a set of u-bolts. I had a bad experience with CPP. That's why I use ECE (Early Classic Enterprises), POL (Performance OnLine), Belltech, Summit Racing, Jegs, McGaughy's, Western Chassis, or just about anyone else,... for my suspension products.

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
what Keith said. you will more than likely not get squat from the CPP. why?
1. somewhere in the paper trail it stated that CPP is not to be held responsible for blah, blah, blah. that's just standard business practice. 2. they have lawyers that have heard these type of issues before. question. how are these u-bolts not long enough? is only half of the bolt threaded on? since the mechanic did the hard work already, breaking the old u-bolts out, lifting the axle, inserting the blocks, it should be a piece of cake to do it yourself. if you were closer, I'd do it for you for a beer..... or two...... or three

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Reason why you need to check for fitment before trying to install anything, I agree that they should pay for shipping the correct ones and for the shipping of the wrong ones...Good Luck!!!

While they may not pay for the labor because it's not a standard in the industry, there's absolutely no reason they can't 'comp' you for something else of comparable cost to promote good-will. I work for a food manufacturing plant that garantees our products are free from defects, is the highest quality, correct vs. your purchase, made w/natural ingredients, & will sell (for distributors). If not, we take it back & you receive a voucher (consumers) or it goes toward your future purchases (distributors). That might have something to do w/why we're @ the top of our market??

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Yes guys your right.
The shipped the wrong size U-Bolts. The ones that came with the 2" were JUST LONG ENOUGH to thread the nut onto, but not long enough to tighten that nut down far enough to take advantage of the built in "Lock" on the Nut's "head". I have suggested to CPP, that when selling any future kits, they have a disclaimer that states "Whenever installing these U-Bolts, make sure they are the correct length"............. and then state the length of what each U-Bolt should be for the cooresponding Block1", 1 1/2" or 2". I mean even a coupon for 20% off your next purchase would be good. At this point they, (CPP) think that there is (and I quote) "No pleaseing me". As for installing myself, a work injury 3 years ago and 7 operations since then, pretty much render me usless when it comes to bending, stooping, laying under/over a vehicle. Roger "RATIKLE"

Re: Lowering blocks for my 72 gmc?
Absolutely Scoti.
I'm a stickler for Customer Service. I was in that same boat with Office Depot for 8 years. I was allowed to give up to a 25% Discount (without Supervisor approval) to any customer. I would have them yelling/Screaming/Cussing and by the end of the Conversation, I had them Thanking Me. That's what brought them back. I even had disgruntled Customers ask especially for me when they had future problems. Just treat me with respect....that's all I ask. Roger "RATIKLE"

You want customer service, call Early Classic Enterprises to order your stuff and forget CPP. I cannot fathom why people still continue to use CPP as many times as this same type of story pops up on the board.
