I picked up a 1968 CST camper special C20 lwb 50th anniversary 1 owner .
The 327 was long gone, truck has been stored indoors for at least last 10 years.
Paint is dead, but overall an extremely clean truck.
I also have a 1968 lwb k20. Rough body but strong runner.
Should I turn my 50th into a 4x4?
Thoughts?

Very nice truck, personally I would save this one and build the 4x4 with something else.

I have to say I go back and forth, I wish I had the original motor, since I don't it keeps me up at night! I want to drive this cool truck! Living in Colorado makes me want the 4x4, but the truck being so clean makes it hard to mess with it.

Short of being a straight fairly rust free 50th CST camper special the truck is pretty basic. No power brakes, no power steering, no a/c.

The confusion is well-founded and chevy didn't help. They put "Custom Camper" on the all the emblems thru 72 (Custom Camper stand-alone emblem in 67-8 as shown above, CustomCamper10/20/30 on the fender 69-71, then CustomCamper script on the door in 72 only. On the SPIDS of some of the 71/72, however, they said "Special Camper" or "Custom Camper" - both were the Z81 RPO. In 73+ they became "Camper Special" - just like ol' Henry Fords.

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention... As much as I'd LOVE a 68 K20 anniversary, I'd keep it original, it's a very nice truck. Find a 327 or just a crate 350 and enjoy it. Nice truck, congrats.

Yes I don't know why people always say camper special when the decal always clearly reads Custom Camper

dude that thing is AWESOME. very well preserved. i have to say i'm not a huge fan of long bed trucks, but i would be proud to drive that thing just like it is.

I am not a big fan of the long bed either, but when I saw how clean and felt the doors with no sag, or play and how smooth they opened and shut, I couldn't help my self! The interior, short of the bench is like a time capsule!

Now I just need to get it on the road!

That thing is awesome! As long as you know at a certain point there is no recouping your "investment" do what the heck you want with it. Make it yours and nice!!

Find yourself another 327 to put back in it, but otherwise, keep it original. It is so nice as it looks right now, if it'd were my truck, I'd cringe at the thought of modifying it.

...there's nothing wrong with having two trucks. A 4x4, and a classic longbed 2wd.
