How do you measure accurately the width of rally rims? In other words, if someone is selling 15x7 or 15x8 rims, how and where do you measure the width? I have found some 15x8 rims for example, I think...they measure 7 and 3/4 from lip to lip...is this a 15x8?? Help!

You measure the inside contact area, where the tire meets the rim. A wheel that measures 7 3/4" to the outside is a 7" not an 8".

As Woody96 stated...the measurement is from the inside of the tire bead to the inside of the tire bead. The standard for lip to lip measurements is 1" wider than the bead measurement.

??? All you have done is take an answered question and confuse it.
Woody96 never said anything about the bead area........only lip to lip. (and I think you'll have to get over the 1/4") It's still a 7" wheel like I said.

LONGHAIR told you right the 1st time.....measure the inside contact area(bead to bead on the tire). The differences in steel or alum wheels , may not be noted in the "rule of thumb books"

Inside contact area and bead area are the same thing! How do you measure a rim at the contact area if there is a tire attached? Well...let me tell you LONGHAIR! The Tire and Rim Association, Inc. that sets the standards for tire sizing and rim profiles has made it standard that the measurement from the very outside of the rim to the very inside of the rim is 1" wider than the actual size that is given when you purchase a rim (i.e. 15x7 will measure 8" wide from lip to lip). I do see that I made a mistake in saying Woody96 and instead should have said longhair.

Now...if you would like to read the information yourself you can go get a copy of the Tire and Rim Yearbook.

Whew!! ...... So, keeping it simple for me-----a 15x8 rim should measure 9" from lip to lip??

Well...........I wouldn't depend on it. Steel wheels are rarely consistant in the rolled area of the rim, that 1" is a "suggested average". Many are stamped with the diameter and width followed by JJ, usually around the valve stem area. Calipers are really the best way to measure a wheel with the tire attached.
Aluminum wheels are all over the board, there are several rim edge types.
